Record price for a D8443?

928gts - 2008-08-18 14:01

While I love these boxes and find them very solid I don't believe they should go for this sort of money.

you better belive it some boxes were not worth basicly nothing until one find gentlemen not a member bought a m70 for a lot more than what the radio was worth that started a chain reaction that has lead even the cheapy ones hard to get its not that bad now but because of that,,the prices have been high Mad

It seems, whether we like it or not, old-school ghetto blasters are hot right now. Boomboxes are showing up on t-shirts and ties, in music videos, and in McDonald's commercials. "Regular" folks (who don't know - or care - what a "reasonable" value is) are buying them (not just "experienced" collectors like us). And new, serious collectors are establishing themselves every day. Some are willing to pay big bucks for what they want.

In fact, it seems the eighties in general are "in" right now... maybe because folks from that generation are finally getting established, making an living, and looking to recover a little bit of their youth, just like previous generations have done with Japanese tin toys, transistor radios, Atari games and Star Wars memorabilia. And it's probably not going to get any better for a while, either... at least not until stuff from the nineties begins to get scarce, and today's 18-year-olds start to get jobs, families and nostalgic for the "good ol' days." So, (if you haven't done it yet), scoop up those Kabooms, mini disc players and Power Rangers figures, and start stashing them away for the demand that's bound to come.

Yeah, for 75% of the cases its the classic example of "more money than brains".

Ooo! Ooo! Ooo! Bid Bid Bid! *makes assorted primate noises*

I take comfort in knowing I'm not that crazy, I won't be paying anywhere near that for any D8443. No offense (I own one) as it's a decent box but It's not worth anywhere near that price to me. No No

No argument here UE but there are lots of cheaper and crappier boxes than this one. The one plus it has is it looks better than it performs, not great looks but again there are a whole lot of uglier boxes. Nod Yes

I will admit that it's definetely one box I would like to sell, to bad it's only in good condtion and not great condition.

Well I have to say I have mine sitting here next to me contently playing away to a George Winston cassette and I think it sounds absolutely wonderful considering its price point and what I paid for it. I'm very impressed with how well it s reproducing the piano and I have to say accurately reproducing recorded piano is a very difficult task.

Maybe I'm off my head but I do enjoy my 8443 very much so however I do believe around $100 is the limit anyone should pay for it. Above $125 or so you get into the "very special" category of boxes that do deserve that sort of coin.

masterblaster84 - 2008-08-19 18:17

928GTS I would agree that every box has it's place but around $200 is taking a step up from where the 8443 should sell for. For under $100 in good shape I do believe it's a perfectly adequate box but it's not the killer it's wall of speakers might suggest.

I agree with you and that is far too high but on the question of quality is anything really "high quality". All of these boxes, even the best, make compromises for their portability. These compromises usually come in the sound department. I don't really approach these boxes with the same hard nosed audiophile sense that I do with headphone and home theatre based audio.

They're not supposed to reproduce a Vivaldi suite in perfect detail, they're meant to be fun, easy(enough)to carry, look good and give some decent sound.

But yeah I do agree, there is a fad about and these boxes(and I mean most ALL boxes)are going for too much coin!

Laugh Out Loud I Agree We aren't into these boxes just for sound quality since none of them produce true hi quality HiFi sound although a few make a pretty good attempt at it. Not that they sound bad but sound is not their main appeal.

To much money? Absolutely! Nod Yes We collect them anyway.

This b-box does have a nice sound, but this particular Philips has a problem: it's looks are writing cheques that it's sound output just can't cash. Crank it & you're talking horrible distortion. It's no heavyweight, for sure.

Remember, Philips/Magnavox stuff was significantly cheaper than all the Japanese brands (well it was in the UK - it's why I bought Philips stuff). The D8443/8444 was priced at mid-size b-box levels - & that big, big woofer was a real draw...
