I apologize for reviving an older thread...

Simply some of the best metal tape made. Mid-late 80s I believe... On the right deck, one can make a CD copy one cannot distinguish from the original. Holds it's properties over time too. I have mix tapes from 15 years ago that still sound perfect. Very high end stuff...

I went to the flea market to get some more metal tapes.
But someone got there 15 minutes before me and took all that was left.

I have some of these Sony tapes but they are nothing specil!
These were Sony's attempt to bring metal tapes to the masses hence a price of £2 for a C90 when available.
The shell is semi-transparent and is not very sturdy. Sound is ok but, much better can be achieved by using their own Sony Metal S formulation for just a little more money.Even Sony's own UX-PRO type 2 tape can show it a clean pair of heels!

If you record on a metal or even CrO2 tape, use a good metal capable tape deck.
Most boombox's are geared to use regular type I cassettes for recording.
Recording metal tape on a non metal capable recorder may not give good recordings.

Sony Super Metal Master for the win.

I concur, while the sony metal master is a good tape with a ceramic composite shell the TDK-MAXG AND MA-R are the best metal tapes around followed closely by the maxell then the sony, BASF metal wasnt all that impressive

Personally,i find the various 'super' metals all have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Here's my own findings:-
Sony metal ES-one of the finest tapes ever made! Strong treble detail and a firm bass. You can push this tape to levels most other tapes can only dream of!
Sony Metal Master-Excellent tape. Very similar to the old ES tape but with a superior shell and a little extra Ooomph across the whole frequency.
TDK MA-R/MA-XG- Excellent mechanics allied to excellent sound all round. Can't really fault this tape.
New TDK MA-XG- Superior double shell give this tape unheard of mechanical stability. Firm sound all round with a slightly soft treble. Can accept high levels no problem.
That's Suono Metal- Excellent tape all round with good sonics although a bit too neutral for some.
Maxell Vertex-Superior shell. This tape has the sweetest midrange and treble of any tape available. Excellent all-rounder. Can be pushed hard without any problem.

The tape and tape deck match is critical. I have my Tascam biased for Sony Metal SR. I re-biased it for TDK MA, but felt the high frequencies didn't have that "sparkle." So, I went back to Metal SR (re-biasing yet again). I understand other decks may like TDK MA better. As much as I like boomboxes, they may not take full advantage of the metal high frequency response when recording. On playback, they sound awesome(!!) with metal tape recorded on a "professional caliber" deck.

If anyone doesn't like Sony Metal SR, and you have a stash, you can send them to me... Big Grin

Excellent info dinosaur! Nod Yes
