Best Sony Walkmans?

jerryjg - 2008-11-17 12:53

Im setting my sights on a top of the line Sony Walkmans.
Which are the top of the line Walkmans-which are the best?
How much difference is their between the various top models, and how much should I expect to pay?
Thanks

It all depends on what you like. Look at agentorange pictures and see which would look cool to you. Granted, getting all the great looking ones or the cool looking ones (the Aiwa chrome units) come once in a blue moon and command big bucks. Take a visit on www.pocketcalculatorshow.com or http://www.walkmancentral.com/ and see which ons catch your eye. This hobby can get very expensive and time consuming, so you can't see you weren't warned.

actually, ya'll could have just said WMdc2 D3and d6. I wouldve found out anyway. This is a very clickish bunch here..and noother word than to say..greedy. Yall were afraid id steal your goodies on ebay. whatever.
Or you just couldnt be bothered to lift your elistist standards to help someone starting out. Very bad taste folks.Turns out i dont need your help at all. I can do my own research. Have fun being snobs.
...Ive been here since 06 btw.

Jerryjg, where did that outburst come from exactly?

Can I suggest you take yourself back to AgroChat.com & maybe when you've learned how to behave around folks who from what I can see are giving genuine advice to what was a very ambiguous question, not to mention rather poorly spelt.

You asked "Which are the top of the line Walkmans-which are the best?"

Honestly, how the hell are we supposed to answer this?

"A clickish bunch", yep, that's us. Please go away until you've learnt the basics of chatroom etiquette.

Aiwa makes good Walkman type players-I have a HS-TA223 with adjustable bass/treble/super bass (Aiwa's name for MEGA BASS type sound).

It's black with a brush metal trim around the adjustable bass/treble/super bass sliders.

Also has a great AM/FM tuner with excellent reception.

It's from the early 1990-1994, I think.

since i started collecting a couple of years ago i have owned alot of different brands of cassette players. i love the little wm-10's and 20's that sony made. very fragile but cool. but i have had the best overall luck with the sanyos as walkgirl seems to have had too. for the money i seem to get the best overall look, condition and function ect. i am looking hard at any sanyo that comes up for sale now. i hve not had a bad experience yet either.

Are far as Sony is concerned i would say that No.1 for sound is obviously the WM-D6C although it is a little bulky. For a similar sound but in a more compact dimension try locating either a WM-DD9 or WM-DC2.Finally if you'd like a first class solid, punchy sound with oodles of class and ease of use try a WM-808EX. Also, don't forget that no matter which walkman you choose please, please, please change the headphones!!!!

aa.fussy - 2008-11-23 19:32

I like the WM-FX101.

Very simple to use with AM/FM radio that has good reception and sounds OK.

litfan - 2008-11-24 07:52

WM-7 for me. i love listening to tapes on that thing.

I would go for this one also, maybe not the best sounding or looking, but I think it's one of the most impressive pieces of tech for its time.

tranxmetal - 2008-11-28 08:51

Sony have a lot of good Walkmans, but many of the late units (mid 90s and later) sounds very fairly, with some exceptions of course, WM-FX52, WM-EX52, WM-FX50, WM-FX507 ARE EXCELLENT SOUND MACHINES another really good (in sound quality) is the WM-FX493 but this unit needs some more power. The MEGABASS feature in some WMs delivers great and rich bass sound. Also some Walkmas I love are the SANYOs and the AIWAs, including some rare GENERAL ELECTRIC Walkmans. It is important, at the time I test a Walkman, always first impression is with a pair of KOSS noise-cancelling headphones or a pair of SENNHEISSER earbuds to let the Walkman deliver all the power in it.

Favorites, I don't think I have any in special, some are great, some don't, but it is a delicious hobby and always I have lots of fun when I found and repair someone.

In addition to Sony Walkman models, I very much like the Aiwa HS-TA223 (1994).

This Aiwa model features two different kinds of bass enhancement-SUPER BASS and BASS with the former giving a very rich bass sound similar to MEGABASS.

Both are set and adjusted using sliders on the cassette door.

just for fun i bought a real nice early to mid 1990's realistic. the more i used it the more i realized how good it is. i saw parts that started to look familiar to me. then i figured it out. the 1990 radio shack realistics are made by aiwa. wow,,,no wonder the build and sound are a cut above the others. the only fault is they are not as pretty as the mid 1980 aiwas.

nga - 2008-12-05 14:28

TPS-L2 the best.

aa.fussy - 2009-01-09 10:22

One of the nicer late 1990's Sony Walkman is the WM-FX195 which has a MEGA BASS switchthat can be used to emphasize sound more , a FM/AM radio with good reception and the tuning dial is funky (diagonal style)

My favorite is the Panasonic RX-1924 Walkman. You guys can check out the pics in the Walkman photo area. This Walkman is so def and sounds really good with average Sony headphones but is a big guy who is built like a brick and takes 4 AA batteries. Check it out !!!!

zx280 - 2009-02-04 16:13

What about the top end Shockwaves. Great performance and you either love or hate the look.

rerooted - 2009-02-04 19:04

i have been very impressed with the late model panasonic shockwaves. i just got a rq-nx60v. this one i don't see around much. it is mostly a metal case. this is the only one which i believe could use some more bass. my favorite though is the rq-sw99v. it is the red and black one that gives a neck vibration with the headphones. the only problem is the earpiece is a bit tight and is much better by adding extra foam. even with regular headphones the deep bass is very nice. they are still available on amazon.com but at the crazy price of $200+. it comes in silver and blue also but the red and black is really impressive. the single AA battery really lasts about as long as they say.
