My Amazing Mysterious Sony Man

carl - 2011-02-23 16:51

hi, just joined the site, i stumbled across it while researching an item thats i've had for years, it first appeared in my dad's garage my best guess would be early to mid 80's since then it's followed our family about when we moved house always ending up back in the garage, it scared my mum, my dad kept trying to dump it but i always rescued it, gave it a wash with hot soapy water and put it back on the shelf, now i have my own house with my own garage and it's time to finally solve the mystery of the weird Sony man, it measures 15 inches tall, and the platform he's holding measures 5.5" X 5" it's made of some sort of plastic in one single piece, there are holes to feed cables front and back, i'm pretty sure i remember seeing him in retailers as the Sony Walkman Shop Display, perhaps he is the original Man who Walks ..... i can't find anything on the net anywhere, nobody i have asked remembers seeing anything like it, can anyone help, thanks carl

Hi Carl,

Welcome and thanks for sharing the photos.  I've never seen this promotion before.  I wonder if it's a display for the Walkman or the Discman.  Will headphones fit on his head?  It reminds me a bit of this guy:

 Conan O'Brien

With that gravity defying hairstyle the resemblance is uncanny ! just tried a pair of headphones on him they sit there perfectly, it could well be a display for the Discman, good point, i'll try a few more searches with that in mind, loving this site, think it's time i got my big ol' Aiwa boom box down from the attic next ...

That man really has high hair!

If I had to guess I'd say it's for the Discman, maybe the D-50.  One hole would be for power, the other for line out.  These match the location of the D-50 and the platform size matches a PCDP too.

thanks for that, after watching the movie i can see it's gonna fit perfectly, if it was a Walkman Sony man's proportions would be all wrong, i'm sure some company men worked long and hard to get the display just right, i'm gonna have to get a D-50 and some phones for him, wire it all up as it would have been, and post some fresh pics, i don't have the heart to put him back in the garage again which reminds me i know there's one of the first Sinclair pocket tv's  somewhere in there, the CRT version, i'll make that my mission for today .....

Very interesting thread, Carl. Thanks for sharing. I owned a retail clothing and accessory store for 12 years, so I love anything to do with displays!
