Truth about DrMR2000

tuna - 2011-03-02 08:51

Dear friends and walkman collectors,

I am writing this in hope you will not pass judgement on me or anyone else but I simply cannot hold it a secret anymore. My conversation with AgentOrange and people on this forum I consider friends encouraged me enough to do this and I realized that by keeping silent, someone else might have to go through what I had gone through. I don't want that to happen. What I have to say is rather unpleasant I'm afraid. Please understand that this is not a rant but simply a way of expressing my disappointment and sadness because of what has happened.

Simply put, DrMR2000 is a fraud. This last year he has done nothing to make good on his promises concerning our agreement.

Last February I sent him one of my most valuable walkmans, the Aiwa HS-PX303. The player was operational but not perfect by any means. Now, DrMR2000 is technically skilled and has all the proper tools and certainly knows electronics better than I do so I decided to take the plunge. It was made clear from the start that this was not going to be a mercy-act on his part and that he would be compensated for anything that he saw fit. Like most people here, I have no problems paying a premium for something that I enjoy so much. I also sent him a few other players for the parts he needed to fix some players from his own collection. Next month I sent him my other walkman, the Aiwa HS-PL30 as well as a non-functional Aiwa HS-PX505 to use for parts. Communication between us was rather good back then and I considered him a friend because I felt he didn't do it for the money or the parts. Then in April, we negotiated a trade. He asked me if I had an MD recorder. I did have a Sharp MD as a matter of fact. A rather expensive piece of hardware which was bought new and used only once by me. The complete package. I also agreed to send him my mint Panasonic walkman with all the accessories including the box. The trade was for a Sony WM-550C (some might remember my thread here some time ago about that player). So I packed the Sharp and the Panasonic and sent them the fastest and safest way possible. Naturally, I expected that he would do the same. I was wrong. He waited for my package to arrive. Apparently, he didn't trust me enough even though he had had my Aiwa players which I considered much more valuable than the ones I was sending him. After he got my package, he decided to send his the cheapest way possible. I waited for two months for the walkman but it never came. So he sent me his other one in July. This kind of a treatment would certainly get him a seriously negative feedback on eBay. But I didn't think much of it despite the fact it seemed rather unfair to me at the time. Everything would be good if that Sony was like he said it was, which is to say, perfect both visually and technically. Visually it was but it was not operational which seemed odd because according to him, it was repaired by him just a month before he sent it. And not only that, the charger was missing from the package. I was extremely disappointed with this. Okay, it could happen to anyone but waiting for something for so long and then having to think how you will have to send it back and do it all over again was not something I was looking forward to.

July was the turning point when it all started to change. It was obvious that someone had done some work on the Sony before but it certainly wasn't a month ago and there was physical damage to the mechanism which could not have occured during transport. Not without serious damage to the exterior of the unit anyway. The belt inside was a decade old. The communication at this point became sporadic and in the end I was getting no replies to my emails at all. It was not until October that I got a word from him as to the reasons for his absence. I won't even mention those because I don't believe a word he is saying. At that point, four months have passed since he got an email from me saying the Sony isn't what he said it was. Four months! In his mail to me that he sent in October he mentioned some 3rd person that ruined his plans but like I said, I have a hard time believing a single word he is saying.

Then some two months ago, I finally got a reply from him saying he cannot return my players for the reasons I won't even get into because, like I said, I don't beliieve he was honest. In return, he offered me an Aiwa HS-PX505 which he had repaired. In those two dails of our communication, we exchanged almost 100 emails. That was more than two months ago and the last thing he told me is that he had sent the player and that he would send me a tracking number that evening. I never got that number nor did I hear from him since.

At this point I am certain he has no intention of fullfilling his obligations towards me and that I will never get my things back. I am disappointed and I am hurt. I am not a walkman collector in the sense some of you guys are. I like walkmans a lot yes but to me they are a means of listening to music when I am out. Also, the walkmans I have are probably not the best ones out there but each one has something that makes it special to me, a story behind it, how I got it or what it reminds me of. The Aiwa HS-PX303 is a TOTL late 1980s player yes but to me, it is a present I got from a friend. The Panasonic I sent him had sentimental feelings since it was the model I had in college that got stolen afterwards. You get the picture. The Sony WM-550C seemed interesting to me because I lost the bidding on one of those a long time ago.

Sad times have come if one's word means nothing. We really entered a morality crisis as well as economical crisis. I have no intention of calling him names. It is not my way. What I made was a mistake. The first person that ever offered to help me was Renzgi and I cannot thank him enough for the trust and friendship he has shown me. My mistake was believing DrMR2000 was the same when in fact, they are two worlds apart.

In the end, I have only this to say – no matter what may come out of this, I feel better. I feel lucky because this has been a valuable lesson for me. Also, if I had to meet one DrMR2000 and lose some players along the way I still consider that a fair trade. Why? Because of all the other good people on this forum. I will not mention anyone but you know how you are. I wish DrMR2000 was an honorable person but unfortunately for me (and him), he is not. I'd like to think that what I have done to others so far has been more good than bad and I wish I could say the same about DrMR.

I thank you all for reading and understanding!

Hey Tuna,

I am sorry to hear about your loss and the bad experience you had with DrMr2000. It really hurts when someone you trust betrays you. I hope this post makes him realize his mistakes. You have been such a great member of this forum and always willing to help. I feel your pain.

gregorybotha - 2011-03-02 10:05

Hi Tuna,

I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune. I think it is a sign of the times. Don't let it spoil your enthusiam for collecting / enjoying your vintage Walkmans.

I've had a similar experience with a Nakamichi deck I bought, not through eBay. eBay states somewhere on there website that "eBay has proven that people are basically good". Yes there are good people in this world however mostly only when they're kept in line by good systems, eBay give you 45 days to open up a case against a seller. Has anyone ever come right trying to sort things out after the 45 days have expired? Nobody wants to throw the first stone, so I haven't made use of the resolution centre yet but this has left me up stream without a paddle once or twice.

Trump it up to experience and be more circumspect next time.

Cheers,

Greg

Greetings Tuna,

I am sorry to hear of your troubles with DrMR2000. Unlike a more modern appliance, these items are very hard to replace. For instance, the px-303 very rarely comes up for sale. I cannot begin to understand the frustration you must be feeling.

Last august i posted pictures of my jx-3000. DrMR2000 asked if the unit was fully functioning. I told him it was not, and he offered to repair it for me. I had no problem sending it to him, as i regarded him as a respected member of this forum. The unit was posted on March of last year. He received it maybe three weeks later, and emailed me to say he had carried out the repair. I paid him for the repair (very little money to be fair) and he posted the item back to me. Weeks went by and still no sign of it. I emailed him regarding it, and he assured me it had been shipped. After many emails, he told me he had gone to his local post office to check it out. Apparently the unit was being held in customs for some reason. So after over four long months i received the unit. He had very carefully packaged it. Also, the parcel was registered. All i can say regarding the repair is that i was 100 percent happy. He is clearly a very good electronic technician. The unit now works perfectly. Not one mark or scratch.

Also, many months before this i was looking for a sony wm-701s. He sent me a pm to say he had one, and similar to your story he would swap it for a high end minidisc recorder. I cannot remember the model number he was after, but i managed to get it for him. We agreed on the deal and i posted the MD player. I received the 701s three weeks later. In mint condition with is box and all accesorise. All it required was a new belt which i replaced.

We appear to have had two different experiences regarding our dealings with DrMR2000. I found my dealings with him to be perfect. You on the other hand were clearly wronged by him. I only hope he reads this post. Hopefully he will realise  he treated you unfairly, and try and sort things out with you.

Regards.
Derek.

Thank you for your support guys! It's been more than a year since I sent him my Aiwas and I think I can say with certainty he will not be returning them. I've moved on and like Greg says, am trying to take the loss and call it experience.

Derek, you are lucky yes though you waited an eternity to get that player back. I'm glad it turned out well for you. I think all of us here know Mr. Mediterrano71. The last time he showed up here, there was a huge argument between him and DrMR2000 because Mediterrano71 sold him a broken WM-EX5. We all defended DrMR and even going to the point of reporting Mediterrano71 for fraud to eBay. I thought that is what you do for fellow-member but I guess the love flew only one way. Sorry, I just can't hide my disappointment.

renzgi - 2011-03-04 11:29

Dear Antun,
I am disappointed that a member have one of my good friends cheated.
I know you've been quite reluctant to do these steps. But, it's good that you have written here your bad experience with DrMr2000.
I hope you have not lost the joy for Walkmans
and still have confidence to find here good friends.

 All the best, Renato

Thank you Renato! I feel fine. Really! It was a wake-up call for me.

eclipsedave - 2011-03-10 14:12

Sorry to hear about this.
I've attempted to be as honest as possible in my life and look back at the honesty with a great deal of satisfaction, but over the past 3 weeks, I've become completely and sometimes painfully honest.

I've also begun to call others out the very split second they lie. I believe we, meaning humans in general, may be entering an era where people are fed up with all the crap that bullcrappers of all types have been spreading far too long...

Or maybe it's just *me* that's fed up?

toocool4 - 2011-03-11 08:34

Hey Tuna this is bad. Like others have said don’t let it put off, most of us here are good guys.

tuna - 2011-03-11 13:06

I think it was all worthwhile. Time well spent. I got burned but that's not gonna change my opinion about anything. People get fed up yes but still, you gotta love the ambivalence or otherwise it'd be a boring world!

bub - 2011-03-12 02:48

Sorry to hear about that.

I do however wonder if the 550C did break in transport- The mechanism is very fragile. In fact, I just took my GX51 (same transport) out of the closet and the motor has failed again. There are strangely loads of GX51s at my local flea market- Last I counted 5 of them- and they all suffer from the same problems (cracked gears, dead motors,) which makes me feel that the GX51/2095/550C mechanisms are just simply not worth the trouble, as they will still break anyway.

The number of GX51s all at the same place does amuse me though. And the confused look of the Old Chinese men tying them out and wondering why they won't work.

tuna - 2011-03-14 08:25

Hi bub! Thanks for your reply!

Well, I won't say it is impossible that the damage was caused during transit but it is highly unlikely it happened. The belt inside was very old, I'd say a t least 10 yeas or more and it was stretched by one third of it's total length so I don't believe the walkman was repaired like he said it was.

I will agree on the fact that it is a low grade mechanism. I was interested because it was a dolby C walkman.

bub - 2011-03-14 11:59

More random hilarity on this mechanism: One flea market seller was convinced his GX51 missing the reverse takeup reel was part of the design despite the fact that it had autoreverse. The cracked gear causes the spring loaded reel to pop out easily, another common problem.
The gear responsible for holding the takeup reel in is thinner on one direction than the other, causing this to happen. My solution is to get another thicker gear from a parts unit and grind the motor casing down a bit to accommodate for its extra thickness, which improves reliability. My my main issue is still the poorly made motor, which is not sealed and susceptible to rust in humid weather.

The 550c is a beautiful looking top of the line playback walkman in the same veins as the DC2, but most models of this era was based on the 2095 mechanism. Thankfully the much later EX-1 logic series was much better in design.

tuna - 2011-03-21 11:39

I will be sure to try that thank you bub!
