I disagree! Not useless as the main controls are located on the top. Useful as it means you don't have to rummage too hard when controlling the thing whilst in your jeans/inside jacket pocket. I have an X Series MP3 WM and this has proved to be the case as controls are not dissimilar. Nice piece actually, fair deal I reckon.

This is a very nice and unique player, in fact it is a very hard to find especially this color, I've been looking for one for more then 3 years. I finally got one a while back. here is the brochure for that.
Remote or not! this is a COOL Walkman and doesn't require a remote as Nak D said all functions on the unit...
