Using My Walkmans on the Underground

type2tapehead - 2012-01-25 13:26

I've never payed much attention to people or the expressions on their faces as i pull out my walkmans whilst on the train until recently, when a girl (approx 15-17) asked me what's that (no it did'nt make me feel like a dinosaur). she was probably pushed into asking by her friends, I explained as briefly as i could,(not everyone shares the same enthusiasm for walkmans as we do) she asked for a listen and was shocked how good it was, even liked my music( maroon 5, moves like jaggar in case your wondering). It was the turn of my Sony wm-ex505 not the best sounding unit but very modern in looks and functionality, anyway her friends also got a listen and the feedback was very much in favour of my walkman, they said it had better bass, was louder, and the battery life was unbelievable around 40+ hrs combined ni-cad and AA cells in comparison to thier ipod's and iphones. However only 20 or so tracks on each cassette plus realtime recording were limiting factors, I guess you can't win them all, thier parent's also confessed to using walkmans many years ago but never expected see anyone to be doing so in today's world of digital dominance. Anyone else with similar experiences.

Great story!

I have a story to share as well, but it involves my kids.

My oldest laughed at my Sony WM-101 and it's antiquated technology, especially the need to "fast forward or rewind" to skip a song. He had me there and on the limitations of the tape (60 or 90 mins max)

But when I told him how we used to dub albums and tapes, he stood there like a deer in headlights...he had no idea what I was talking about. I had to dumb it down to Napster/ filesharing references. Only then did he appreciate the iTunes free approach to "sharing".

Funny thing is my Walkman has already outlived his first iTouch....by30 years!!

score one for the old man

excellent stuff

Not really a story, but I have an EX-506 which seems to be almost identical to your 505.

I bought it in 2006 for £6.99 on eBay - brand new & unused.

It's in use as the cassette section of my car stereo, which has aux in as well as a dedicated (30 pin) iPod in. The sound (with a decent tape) is at least as good as the iPod, but not quite up to the CD (it is a top of the line head-unit). The single AA battery lasts for an astonisingly long time. The headphone remote is useful when on the move too, as the walkman is in the glovebox.

I have a 3rd gen Ipod which still functions whilst connected to the mains but the battery inside it is dead, Apple offered my £30 discount toward a new Ipod or £60 to replace the dead battery, I kindly declined both offers, then pulled out my trusty Sony TP-LS2  and informed the spotty little so an so that was serving me, this is 30+ yrs old and still works perfectly. He was shocked especially when he heard how good it sounded, the shop manager's comment was there's nothing made these days that comes close to the quality of the original walkmans i said too right and walked out. Bought my ex-505 for £5 inc remote in mint condition at a local cash converters shop, not bragging but you can pick up some excellent bargins at these places also at charity shops(white Sony wm-22 with battery cover intact £2), also a recent purchase although not a walkman, again mint condition(not a scratch on it anyware) a super rare Pioneer f-91 tuner for the give away price of £10 (value £160+). It helps if you befriend a employee at one of these establishments, I sometimes have a nice walkman put aside for me or MD or rarer still portable DCC recorder. My 7yr old daughter has also expressed amazment at how compex walkmans are, and how a tiny fragile rubber drive belt can be so important in  the functionality of a walkman only after she had fitted one did it dawn on her, she was so amazed by watching all the spools turning as a newly fitted belt brought my Sanyo mg-80d back to life, that she refused to allow me to replaced the back cover of the unit. Maybe I will let her take it to school, just to see what the other kids make of it. My slightly older son does'nt express much interest, however he likes the LED'S on my Sony wm-d6' and d6c's, his most recent comment was dad how comes you dn't use your iphone on any of your docking stations eh. Sorry if my stories seem never ending.
