Cassette Blanks- Our new currency?

bonzo - 2012-02-05 10:29

At my desk I have a Sony WM-100 in my pencil jar and my AIWA HS-T600a sitting next to it (shouldn't be a shock, to those who know me). I was waiting for someone to either call me a nut- or talk about all things walkman.

The other night, my coworkers and I went out for drinks. One really great guy I work with asked me "are you really into cassette players?". Turns out he is too. Offered to help fix some of my units.

We started discussing how many blank cassettes we owned. He had 100+ and I have many 20+ unopened Type II or IV. I think I really need to step up my game, since these they ain't makin' more of the good kind.

Gauging on eBay, the best average price for, at minimum, a Type II blank is around $4/per. The price on these things will go up and up (as long as folks like us are around). So, I am going to be keeping my eyes open for a lot more blanks.

Another coworker quizzed us as to what we would do with these blank cassettes. The question, honestly, was silly to he and I as OBVIOUSLY the last thing you'd want to do with a blank unopened cassette is USE it. I wish I had a better rational reason other than "you might need it some day".

Maxell, Sony, Denon... here I come. You wanna call me a Walkman and cassette hoarder- I am guilty as charged.

Some day you shall see me on a NYC subway with my WM-10 pausing to turn the cassette over. I can hear the guffaws now- "No auto-reverse? What is this- 1983?".

TDK SA's are still under a pound a pop in these parts

they are still being made - not in Japan - but decent tapes are still available in my experience

(still doesn't stop me stockpiling mind)

I still have unopened my stockpile of about 30 TDK MA-XG 90’s, about 18 TDK SA-90’s and 1 lonely TDK AR-90.

I wish companies like TDK, Sony etc would start to make them again, as I see there is still a demand for them. Even if they charged more for them they would still sell. If they charged £15 for an MA-XG 90 instead of the usual £9.95, I for one would still buy them. I would not pay eBay prices that is just daylight robbery.

when were MA-XG's 9.95?

They were 11 pounds in 1988!

They where but came back down in the early 90’s well that is what my local Hi-Fi shop sold them for £9.95.
