Engineers Art or not?

retrodos - 2012-10-09 21:04

Don't know if anyone consider this art, a very poor attempt to make money, or weird and unconventional way to make money off items that otherwise would have no value, or very little value, or electronics serial killer, as he does it to all kinds of electronics? I'll let you be the judge?

HALF

ARSED

I think its the product of a deranged mind!!!...the concept is sound but this one has just been really badly done.  My brother sent me the following picture, don't know where he got it from but its a similar idea but executed far better!

when in 1917 duchamp sent a battered urinal for a sculpture at the Society of Independent Artist, called it Fountain and signed it Richard Mutt (= R. Mutt, ie Mutt(e)R, German for Mother), he was deliberatily provoking his audience. was it art? not at that time, now it's commonplace in art history books.

starting with the historical avant-garde, contemporary art can be --and often is-- conceptual. we can discuss of course if it is good or bad, if we like it or not. but we can hardly deny its status only because we don't approve of/understand it.

as for the first image, we don't know the context of the work. per se, the bare image is not particuarly meaningful. the second is more pleasant and intriguing. however i might even prefer the first one if i knew its conceptual background --if it had one, and if it was as thought-provoking as duchamp's fountain.

art should make us think, not necessarily please us. otherwise it's interior decoration, craftsmanship or just other.

Hurry people. Only one left. At $1250 it's sure to fly off the shelf.

If it was made by a backward - if well meaning - 5 year old, fair enough, bravo. But I think this was made by an art student or similar and is tripe.

minty - 2012-10-10 06:50

I don't get the whole art thing. Take for instance the Black Square. It's a work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich. It's a black square painted on a piece of canvas. How can this be called art? Regardless of what meaning it may have.

This isn't art Retrodos...it's what I'm left with after "fixing" my walkmans...Don't you have some leftover pieces after re-assembley??

northerner - 2012-10-10 07:26

I actually quite like a bit of modern art...I've been to a few modern art places around the globe and it varies from 'what the f*** is that rubbish' to some amazingly clever and thought provoking pieces of work...pic 1 is the former

Anthony Gormley for example has produced some good stuff and is not a complete nutjob...I met him at the Baltic in Gateshead and he seemed almost normal

one thing is art --the more thought-provoking the better-- one other is the art market --detestable. like portable audio (lovely) vis-à-vis ebay (...)

Most of the artwork in my house is stuck to the refridgerator and is drawn in crayon. I guess on some level it could be deemed "modern art"

bison - 2012-10-10 08:12

it amazes me some of the stuff people call art.

that said im a graffitti artist and not many people would call that art,

im sure i could knock a couple of those spray painted boomers up in minutes with a couple of the cheapo boxes i have lying around

sure it could! but you you look skeptical --even sarcastic--, in other words you're the first one to think otherwise. so alas, it is definitely not, which means that you're out of the opulent art market...

Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,

isn't that a haiku!? ...actually I think the discussion could have ended with clarets comment, wasn't really any need to say anything else!

yeah but then we would have been deprived of the pleasures of The Civil Conversation (Stefano Guazzo, 1574)

just put the right price tag on them, and you could call it art
