Low activity in this forum?

walkman.archive - 2013-09-05 12:30

Hi dear members,

Looks to me that in the last months/year there's been low or very low activity in these walkman forums, don't you think?

i.e.: in this chat forum, which is normally one of the most populated, there have been only 10 post in august, which is supposed to be a month on which people have so many free time.

I also see very few people sharing their collections, thoughts, new acquisitions... On the other side, the boombox forum is more active every day.

What is happening? Is there less and less interest in walkmans every day?

soundboy - 2013-09-05 14:02

hey im not sure for me I don't use walkmans because I get a head ache for some reason my guess it is like anything popularity come and goes

I'm never that keen on posts like this Hugo as they don't really help too much.  It's like going to a rubbish party and asking everyone why the party's so rubbish.

It's seasonal, many of us have children and don't really have the time to spend online, I know I don't.  It's normal, believe me.  Anyone, like me who sells a lot on eBay will tell you that the best times to sell are Spring and Fall, for the exact same reasons.

radio.raheem - 2013-09-05 23:19

Hugo does have a point....its been very quiet on the whole forum for some months now

Well, I agree that it's not that useful... or maybe do.
I don't see it like going to a rubbish party. For me it's been a long-time party that has been a lot of fun and enjoying. The question is: why it's not that much now?

I guess it's probably this 50%, but I guess the other 50% is all those guests that have good collections and they are here just looking for a long time and don't have the courage to post anything until many months or even years.
If any guest is reading me: "hey, why don't you register and start enjoying more? Do share your walkmans, thoughts, new acquisitions... whatever you like, and we all will enjoy much more. The more we are, the more we enjoy"

Well, I hope this helps collectors to mind about this problem. We all know this is not like football/rugby, with millions and millions of fans, so if we don't feed our unique forum, we won't have a nice place to enjoy and share our favorite hobby, don't we?

im with chris on this one.....2 kids in holiday time and your f@!cked

toocool4 - 2013-09-06 01:41

I think it’s like agentorange say’s it’s just having time, so many of us are busy with many things that we do not get time to post everyday.

I have the site opened in the back ground while I’m at work, but only jump in to say something every now and then.

northerner - 2013-09-06 03:04

Well I'm one of the few bucking the trend as I've just had a quick look back at my activity list and since the 1st of July there has only been 4 days when I didn't post a comment!...and that was when I was on holiday!...and on most days I make loads of comments.

I'm actually slightly embarassed at how many posts I make...I mean I've got a wife, two kids, a dog, a mortgage, a full time job but still I manage to hang out here every day blathering on about boomboxes!  If a mod can tell me the number of posts I've made since I joined I'd be very interested (and probably even more embarassed!)

nickfish - 2013-09-06 03:04

I have tried several times recently to post replies on threads that interest me and add pictures. On only one occasion was this successful. I would have posted a load of pictures of my collection but just can't be bothered with the frustration. If I can't even copy and paste a picture, why take all the time and trouble to try to upload loads of pictures?

A lot of people got very frustrated when the system was changed to allow moderation of all submissions and I suspect some of them are here less because of that. I know that a couple of long time members have been selling off their boxes or having to restrict their activities for political reasons. I know that at least one member is just tired of reading the same old opinions from the same old people.

On a brighter note; there have been some new and enthusiastic members that have been very active. Perhaps some of the old hands have been less active because the newbies are 'carrying things along nicely' and they don't necessarily feel that they have much that they want to contribute at the moment; even if they had the time?

It get's a bit tiring that a lot of newbies are only here for a guide on value for something they clearly want to make a killing with on Ebay or only want to find a particular machine and expect some sort of 'mates rates' deal before disappearing for good. It makes me wonder whether we should produce a league table of boomboxes and determine the best and worst plus a guide to values and condition. Probably most visitors would find what they need and not even say hello unless they wanted to sell something or promote that sale elsewhere!

When I arrived I read a lot of threads that interested me, then joined so that I could ask some questions. I was very wary of doing so because I thought that the regulars would be fed up with answering the same questions all the time but I was delighted to receive some in depth advice and guidance from some very long standing members and ended up meeting a few and doing business with them. A couple of them are now very good mates. I have been able to buy machines from some far away places from some trusted sources. I have learned which machines are desirable and which are best avoided. I, In turn have helped some people to find the machines and parts that they need and find this very rewarding (even if the repaired machines have been promptly sold!) but for these reasons and more I would implore anyone that has been reading as a visitor to say hello; Share their story, their interests and passions. The ebb and flow of daily life means that we won't all be here all of the time, but we have a passion and this is where we will continue to meet because nobody else understands it!

walkman.archive - 2013-09-06 03:21

Well, I have two kids also. One is 5-yr old and the other is just 5 months, so you can imagine...

northerner - 2013-09-06 03:26

Yep what Nick said  think you've probably hit the nail on the head there with what you say

Tho I've not had problems posting pics either on pc or iphone?...well I for one would love to see your collection Nick so get those pics sorted!

martymcfly - 2013-09-06 08:58

I would say the interest in Walkmans is up.  The pickings on ebay and other sites is very low and no one is letting go of the really great walkmans.  I thing it is starting to dry up and the collectors with the good units are not going to let them go.  As for posting on this site, I have seen quite a few Newbies on here lately, but it is usually because they are looking for that certain unit.

When I first joined I too started with the "does anyone have" post.  Now I use this for info and to buy mostly.  I am going thru a nasty divorice and most of my collection is in a controlled climate storage facility.  But as soon as I am able to put my life back together you better believe I will be posting what I have achieved in the 6 short months that I have been buying portable cassette players and vintage Audio equipment.  I did just score a beautiful Aiwa DX-1500 Cd player with the plastic wrap still on the cover and works beautifully!

But to conclude this thought, I love this site!  I am so glad I found Stereo2Go, the folks on here are trusting and just great human beings.  Nice to know there are people like me all over the world that hold onto a dream of our childhood with the one device that made growing up tolerable....  the Walkman, Boom box, or ghetto blaster.  Not a day in my life has gone by, at least during the years when I was of age, when I didn't have a set of headphones around my neck or in my ears, connected to the world  through the gift of music with my Walkman.

Really? damn, purely coincidental, I'm socially cumbersome at best.

Hmmm. Attaching pictures is rather easy, but you may be familiar with that process.
I can make a short tutorial for you. Maybe Agent wants to stick it for every future user...

Yeah, I agree with you that probably some user doesn't like their comments to be approved. I understand that this is a consecuence of the increase of SPAM, and I accept it. However, I guess that there should be a better way to stop it.

Well, newbies asking for help and then dissapearing is very common in almost every forum. I simply ignore every post of that kind unless the guy takes the time to present himself in a separate post before shooting all their questions.

That's the real value of all this. I also stayed for some months reading and reading after posting my first. But I always do that, because I want to 'connect' with people there and learn the basics so I'm not the boring guy who asks million-times-repeated or stupid questions. But after the presentation it's time to share and that's the way to fell better in the community.

brutus442 - 2013-09-06 19:14

I agree with AO. It's a seasonal trend. Wait till the school year settles and people return to their normality.

If people left for any reason it's their choice...but new members do come it and take their place. The door is always open for their return however. I've seen several long time members pop their head in recently (Samsnite for one) and say hi, which is always refreshing.

As far as I'm concerned the S2Go forum is like a pub...drop in say a few words, load a few pics and have a laugh and share the hobby. But like a pub, it's patrons are coming and going at all times and some have more time to visit than others.

As far as Walkman's go Hugo, my budget was slashed by my accountant (read wife) but I did manage to buy a Sanyo model recently off Ebay that was very near and dear to me in full functioning order...but she's no looker. She's got some mileage on her and she shows it.

Stay tuned tomorrow for a little pictorial essay on my very first Walkman I purchased.

deech - 2013-09-07 01:49

I think the same, very low activity here. Only the tedious  " what music you are listening" is active every day. Please close the topic !!! !!! Thats a Walkman Side HELLOOOOOO !!! Lets talk about walkmen and not " what music are you listening".....

That makes us sleepy....

It's worth remembering that this forum is what you make it, it's not Sky TV.  So, really, you only have yourselves to blame for it's recent quietness.

corry - 2013-09-07 05:05

i love this forum !!! But Agent for me tis hart to translate what i mean you know ???

Ha, I don't hate you Corry.  All I am saying is... if you want this forum to be good then make it good.  I don't think we've ever see you contribute anything other than your eBay sales.  You may find the "what music are you listening to thread" boring but at least they are contributing.  Are you a collector or just a seller?  If so then let's see some pics or comments from you.   I personally believe you have a cheek to moan about it if you don't actually give anything yourself.

corry - 2013-09-07 05:30

Yes Agent, understand you. I am a collector sell, you see it every week or days. But how can i made it more interrest for more members. i have shown my collection ( okay, i have new walkmen too ) but its hart to show new and rare walkmen. Everybody here knows everything about all modells ( thats the thing. a revolution is, when you have the "Diana Set" or the 701T complete series from 1 - 250.

Yes, when i think about it, its not easy (

nak.d - 2013-09-07 07:12

I think the "what music are you listening to thread" is great as It introduces people to potentially new music. The only thing I don't like about it is when people quote each other and include the YT vid...it really slows things down when loading and not required (quotes include who you're quoting, that's enough).

I'm sure it's not just S2G that goes quiet from time to time. Besides the forum (ideally) will always be there for us, when we want to use it. There is no schedule.

deech - 2013-09-07 13:45

I think that without music, in a broad sense of the term music,

this forum would be useless .

Judging by the amount of people that reply, it’s obviously well liked. Obviously for you it’s all about collecting, polishing and selling your stereos, for me it’s about using them for what they are meant for which is listening to music. So what is wrong with sharing what you are listening to on them?

There are posts that don’t interest me, I don’t read them nor reply to them hence if you don’t like that post I recommend you not read it.

You hit the nail on the head Deech!

I for one have been introduced to some new music I'd never heard of an would have no knowledge of if it wasn't for the fellow forum members posts. Keep the tunes a flowin'

transwave5000 - 2013-09-07 22:37

I cant find any walkmans at the usual local places anymore

there just not out there like before

Im glad I found what I have.

and I dont use ebay.

Corry, are you joking or are you telling this seriously?

walkmans without music cannot be understanded! Although I didn't post in it because the times I entered I felt my musical taste is very different, it's a good post and it's good to keep it.

Yes, when i think about it, its not easy (

I never seen your collection. What's that post and when did you posted it?

also, it's much better to post many times one, two or just a few walkman than post once the entire collection and never again...

i never posted my entire collection and I doubt I'll do anytime (apart that I'll need a rather big room for photographing it). It's like a good nude picture (I'm talking about good photography, not explicit or porn, of course). It's much better when you suggest by showing just a few things rather that showing them all. If you show all once, you're done. No more interest.

if you show a few, bit by bit, you can do it as many times as you want.

So, as agent said, this is not a walkman TV channel, this is a forum. WE make it. What we do is what we get. If you would post sometimes other things but your own sellings, you will contribute to a better sharing experience.

oh, and if you want advice to get better photos, take a look at my articles about photographing. I've seen very few people to get interest in taking better photographs. So many gadgets look not so cool. A few rules and easy techniques and interest on those walkmans goes up quickly...

deech - 2013-09-08 07:03

I think Corry didnt meant it that way .

I m sure he was just bored not seeing many

pics of his favourite machines being uploaded

in the forum so he decided to say something

about a post that he was bored to see also.

I have a feeling that Deliverance is standing in front of a mirror preparing to show some "selfies" right now knowing his razor sharp humour JK!

That said I agree with you. This is OUR forum and WE make it what it is. I think Deech is spot on..Corry's post may have lost something in translation and it probably wasn't intended as such.

Hey Walkman Archive I think you should post your music as different as it may be, you may get other people interested in it. I have picked up a load of music from this thread as people have posted music I have never heard before.

For me it’s all about the music, else it’s all pointless. The Walkman is a working tool not an ornament.

aob9 - 2013-09-09 02:59

A lot of people aren't collectors. Like me they are interested in a subject (or think they might be) and drift in and out of fora to gain or add some information. I find in some fora (not here actually) if you're not online everyday and not part of the "club" you will be ignored whether you come to offer or ask for information. If the cost of being accepted is obsessiveness then I'm not willing to pay.

I have, however, been offered some really helpful info here and will do the same if I ever have any to offer, I frequently drop in to see what's happening.

As for the general interest in Walkman(s)  I have been asking myself the same question recently. I see very good examples of DD drive Walkman(s) on ebay.uk going for small money. Less valuable items (WM-22/33 etc) are not selling at all, even for tiny money. Personally, I won't be buying again until my recently refurbished DC2 gives up. I love high quality analogue music, collecting is not for me.

interesting statement ...

i had some friends that collected and restored and loved and used daily - a bunch of 40-60 year old american made lathes and milling machines --their passion was to make

these working tools 100% as new and original --they were showpieces but still used to make their $ living creating perfect parts, etc for customers -

their accuracy was always within .0005" -( OEM  factory specs)

at almost no time were they ever free of messy chips & oil & grease-

these were indeed very pleasurable working ornaments

I do think it funny that a thread about low activity promotes so much activity

Gotta agree with the statement about the music...whether its walkmen or boomboxes, without the music its pointless

Controversy sells Si. Just ask Miley Cyrus how it works
