End of an icon

Another icon goes the same way as the Sony Walkman.

Panasonic has announced that they will stop making the Turntable Technics SL1200 / SL1210 from February 2011.

After over 30 years as the number 1 DJ weapon of choice, the SL1200 / SL1210 is coming to an end.

Like the Sony Walkman Pro the Technics SL1200 / SL1210 has been the best since it was released over 30 years ago, many manufacturers have copied and try to improve and failed.

R.I.P. Technics SL1200 / SL1210

The walkman I can understand. Whether we like it or not, the cassette tape has been superceded, more than once now (CD-R... mp3...).

However, I'm not aware than DJs spinning vinyl was in decline?

I can't believe that they're not turning a tidy profit on a turntable that's been in production for decades & costs as much as it does....
Shame.

I have friends who are DJ’s and they have been using CDJ’s / MP3 DJ units.

The CDJ’s / MP3 DJ units are quite sophisticated these days and you can do some amazing things.

For some of my friends all they have to take to clubs is a few USB sticks and they can DJ all night. I can see the advantage, not a lot to carry around. One of the clubs we still all go to still only uses vinyl. I have to admit it looks better and they look more skilled on vinyl decks than watching them on MP3 DJ’s.

I have also seen the MP3 DJ unit crash a few time and have to be re-boot, not funny in a club.

It's sad to see the SL1200 going the way of the SL-1800 and the 11A, all of which I've used. I'm with you Blaster, this is the time to grab one before they're discontinued.

I still use my Technics 1200's when I DJ. I am a mobile DJ too! Yes, they are heavy, but they sound better than any of these CD,MP3,Laptop,Serato, etc, etc. formats. When they produce something as durable as the 1200's, the market is bound to get saturated with them. They last forever! Panasonic/Matsu****a/Technics hit a huge homerun when they designed these!
