davebush - 2011-01-03 12:28

nice write up.....would be nice to think that it would become mainstream

lav.loo - 2011-01-03 13:18

ye it sure would DAVE, i can't see that happening really though, shame really Nod Yes Wink

ffatlac3 - 2011-01-03 15:39

Nah,sorry..I dig that folks may be wanting to turn back to vinyl a bit for it's warmth and crackle etc but to my memory tapes were mostly arse..wooly and prone to snapping and screwing yer cassette deck up,causing untold hassle and painstaking resplicing with bits o selly..the only good thing was that we could all dj making pause button mixtapes..keep em in the loft guys Big Grin

reli - 2011-01-03 15:48

I will say this........Whenever I listen to FM radio, I get the best sound stage from songs from the 70's.....especially soul/R&B. Great stereo separation, and the speakers don't get over-saturated like they do with today's Top 40 junk. I dunno what it is, I'm no techie, but today's music doesn't seem right for analog equipment like ours.

blaster - 2011-01-03 16:57

nice article... Smile

lav.loo - 2011-01-03 17:13

well, whatever the views here guys, there's no denying that cassette tapes are as important to the boombox, as honey is to the bee Big Grin
i have quiet a few mix tapes, some new because i love to manually record of my boxes, and some from back in the day, which still sound great.
in my opinion a good recording on a chrome tape, is as good as, if not better than any other means.
i love the cassette tape, there's just something about putting one into a box and pressing play, hearing them heads engage and watching the reels turn is a real pleasure, for me it's the only way Nod Yes Wink

possibly because these older songs aren't in the radio stations digial library & they're having to actually play a record or CD instead of software. If they are broadcasting an mp3, it'll never sound better than an mp3, however good your tuner is.
In my car, I notice a significant difference in sound quality from different (London UK) radio stations when listening on FM. BBC stations are best for sound quality. They are a little quieter as they're not doing the loudness-saturation thing. Some (like Heart FM) lack bass, others are obviously using 128kbps mp3s, with the characteristic muddling of the treble...

Nice to read this article Cool

Partly what you will find is those old records have the dynamic range still intact.

A lot of the new stuff are so compressed, the quiet parts have been artificially boosted to make it all sound loud that it’s killed the subtle details in the music.

The subtle details make all the difference and if it’s missing, the music does not sound correct.

I have to agree with isolator42 about the BBC stations sounding best.
Anyway Radio 2 - 4 are best, have to say Radio 1 is as bad as all the other ones out there.

reli - 2011-01-04 12:26

Well that is a shame. Don't radio stations have sufficient money/equipment to keep their MP3's in a less-compressed form?

litfan - 2011-01-04 14:51

Brilliant. I found a pack of maxell cro2`s, on a shelf, last week. forgot all about em.

lav.loo - 2011-01-04 15:27

Well I think they cater for the masses who don’t know any better or care. These people listen in the car or on tuners built into their phones.

I mean just look at the amount of people walking around with those horrible white iPod earbuds in there ears, if they knew any better they would know the best place for those earphones is the bin.

a bit BIAS eh, Laugh Out Loud normal BIAS i hope Big Grin Wink

toocool4 - 2011-01-05 15:25

Metal bias i think Cool

retro.addict - 2011-01-06 18:25

That was a very interesting read. Where it said "...technical names such as "chrome bias" and "heavy metal"" - metal maybe, but not HEAVY metal, unless they confused a pre-recorded heavy metal tape for a blank one! Laugh Out Loud

I'm pleased that people are increasing demand for cassettes, if it continues me might even see the higher quality types in production again.

lav.loo - 2011-01-08 13:14
