Tips on saving Fuel

thafuzz - 2008-04-21 09:26

Hi guys/gals. My neighbor showed me this and thought I'd share it with you all. Seems legit. Anyone one else hear about these gas saving tips? TIPS ON PUMPING GAS (Good information)

"I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in
California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my
line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some
tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon..

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we
deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.
One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and
premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of
16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the
ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations
have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the
more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying
in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a
gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the
temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other
petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in
temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do
not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a
fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)
stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low
speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are
pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping
on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes
vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground
storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is
HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank
the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than
you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof.
This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere,
so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I
work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every
gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the
storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the
gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you
might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

Great Tips Adam...
Who woulda Thunk?
Thanks man Smile

Thanks Adam. Smile
I wonder if the information is completely true and if so has anybody actually done any real world testing to see the improvements?

I used to have a cat, and when he would wake up - the first thing he would do was to lick his butt. And that got me thinking - instead of drinking coffee in the mornings - maybe I should start licking my butt as well. And the money saved on coffee would help me pay all the stupid electric and gas bills I have Roll Eyes

Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud Crap Vladi that's funny as hell! Laugh Out Loud

Vladi if you could reach your butt hole then may I suggest for you to be ready for your 15min. of fame in the porn industry! Big Grin

On a serious note Fuzz I appreciate the tip I learned about the 1/2 tank theory through my Colombian friends. The rest is a first I'll try that method. I noticed many times from filling up at fast speed my gas meter would go down a bit quicker than normal. Nod Yes

walkgirl - 2008-04-21 10:57

Well. I think you get the gasoline very cheap in the US!, here one liter is about €1.65
per liter!! Mad Mad Frown

That is why I tank on mondays in germany when the
gasoline is more cheap as at the end of the week
and weekends Smile

vladi123456 - 2008-04-21 11:13

Ya, I have a degree in Finance, so sometimes I get very creative as far as saving money Laugh Out Loud

Walkgirl, you drive to Germany to buy gas?? That is very nice. Maybe our gas is cheaper in the USA, but it would cost me several thousand dollars to visit Germany - which you routinely do on Mondays. Which country do you visit on Tuesdays?? Big Grin

walkgirl - 2008-04-21 11:18

I live about 15km from Germany Big Grin

Tuesdays I do not visit anything, maybe the supermarket or so Smile

vladi123456 - 2008-04-21 11:43

15 km is how far I have to drive to work every day - I can't even imagine living that close to another country.
So I assume you also speak German? In addition to English and Dutch? By the way - is it Dutch? Or Flemmish? Sorry for my horrible knowledge of Europe - all I remember about Holland is tullips, Ruud Gullit and Eindhoven Smile

enskanker - 2008-04-21 11:51

Vladi, follow your cat's routine but do it early in the day before it gets to hot.

sinister - 2008-04-21 11:53

how bout walk or ride a bike. Big Grin

enskanker - 2008-04-21 12:34

I rollerblade, but I don't go anywhere, just around the neighborhood. It does'nt help save gas but I have less after I'm done.

I speak some German, because my Grandmother
was born in Germany Smile, she came to Holland
in 1912 to work as a maid Smile

Flemish is about the same as Dutch, only they
say some things different.

Eindhoven is about 100 km from here, and Ruud Gullit, I
even do not know if he still is alive! Red Face

Tulips are nice Big Grin

The last I've heard - Ruud Gullit is the Manager of the Los Angeles Galaxy (US soccer team). That is the same team where David Beckham now plays.

I've only had the privilege of visiting 7 countries to date. It's very interesting to see how similar we all are. We all complain about the prices of GAS, food, politics, police Wink , etc. After plenty of talking and adult beverages, you begin to see we're all on the same sheet of paper. Once they see they aren't alone, you get along just fine. Met some great friends.

THAFUZZ, that is a good observation. Although I have to warn you - this one time at a bar - after having *plenty of talking and adult beverages* - I began to see a hot girl - who turned out to be quite the opposite when we woke up the next morning, so be careful with that *beer-gougles judgement* - or you might end like ME!! Laugh Out Loud

No, unfortunately not. He has a short haircut and looks like a businessman. I miss the good old days - I used to watch football all the time - and I do NOT understand why they call it soccer in the USA - but that is a different topic Big Grin

oldskool69 - 2008-04-21 13:42

I, like the THAFUZZ, have been all around this chunk of dirt and water called earth and he's right...it's all the same. Though I must admit we have it waaaayyyyyy better in the U.S. for the majority part. No offense to other nations, I just think that pricing wise, living space wise, etc. that "so far" we're in better shape. (Overall quality of life.) We all have the same concerns, loves, hates, etc. We just have different philosophies on how we handle it.

I mean we're talking about fuel prices when some nations are having riots over "food"! Yes I drive a truck. And yes I could drive a Prius or some other micromobile but it's my choice and in the south (Alabama) almost a necessity. I do what I can to save gas by not commuting home during the week which also helps the environment. Smile

And vladi to help yourself, the hot chick hour usually ends by midnight as thats when all the "fine horse drawn coaches" have left and all that remains are "rats and pumpkins"! WinkBig Grin

That's so funny! It reminds me of "I went to bed at 2 with a TEN, then woke up at 10 with a TWO". Scaaary stuff Vladi.

In reference to the title of this thread, it's simple...

Just don't go out. Smile

transamguy1977 - 2008-04-29 09:53

Ive been driving my 150cc scooter it gets about 80 mpg on the street Big Grin.
My Trans Am is getting quite lonely covered up in the garage @ 4.30 a gallon for premium. Eek

thafuzz - 2008-04-29 10:37

I just received several invitations in the mail for upcoming car shows and charity events/ parades. With current gas prices, I don't forsee many people affording to drive their classics very far to attend these events. Even trailering their cars with another vehicle with weight of car trailer really hurts the car enthusiasts. Families/children really enjoy coming to see and hear all the various trucks, cars, motorcycles-but will prob. not see as many. I hope I'm wrong. I filled up "Lucy" with Premium and drove her to a car show just 97 miles away. I couldn't even make it back home with those 18 gallons. Another tank of Premium? Ouch! My neighboring town has Regular unleaded at $4.30 and Diesel at $4.85 (as of a few days ago) Eek

transamguy1977 - 2008-04-29 11:09

WOW 4.30 for regular Eek
my T/A only likes premium. Confused
I may have to drop in a straight six so i can afford to drive it

moncheeto - 2008-04-29 12:25

i have been doing the same with my scooter its way cheaper i only work 2 miles away Big Grin

thafuzz - 2008-04-29 13:24

That's really the smarter way to go for short, everyday commutes. You figure a standard motorcycle weighing a few hundred pounds will carry an average person weighing 150-220 Lbs. An average car/Suv weighing 3,200-4000 lbs. just to carry 1 - 2 occupants for a daily commute. A scooter is even more efficent. I wish I had one of those now to save gas. Maybe next year, when gas hits $8 a gallon No No

jimski - 2008-04-29 14:07

toyota time or a small chevy

l.lopez - 2008-04-29 16:04

Smile I have a Jetta and is very economical car is a 2.0 4 cylinders 5 speed standard and runs smooth and very fast with the power of a 6 cylinder but only 4. I put $20.00 and can go and drive all day. I use super on my tank as I can'y use regular she'll start coughing. Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

Adam thanks for the tips Wink I too am an old car enthusiast and I'm also worried about the effect gas prices will have on the classic/show car scene. I want to finish my 62 Impala this summer but the small journal 327 bored 60 over with 10 ta 1 compression is going to cost me more in a season then the car cost me to build. Probably why I've resorted to other means of enjoyment through other hobbies

Got me a ride that runs on soul Smile

Sneaker soles that is LOL

WOW didn't realize that was going to be so big (if it needs to be remove feel free or just ask me and I'll pull it down (sorry)
