Has anyone had luck when registering a claim with DHL? Hifitom sent me a Telefunken Hifi Studio 1 I traded my PC-55 to him for. When it got to my house my wife said I am not going to like what I see. When I got home two days later and saw it...it looked like someone rolled it off of a cliff then stabbed it for fun. Needless to say the 'Funken suffered some damage. Since it was sent via Deutsche Post(who owns DHL) through DHL, the USPS could not help me much as it was an international shipment. All they do is get it at my local post office dock directly from DHL then bring it to the house which is seven miles away. I had to send a form to Pheonix, Arizona to DHL. DHL in the 'States is a pain because they say it's the DB Post resposibility as it was not DHL direct but they told me to send the form and see what happens. This is such a pain in the a**.

As you can see some parts went for a ride around the inside of the unit while in transit.

These are most of the pictures and after a thourough look see and unsuccessful rescue here's where she is:

1. Left Channel Low Distorted Sound Only
2. Tuner Board Will Need Additional Work
3. Cassette Doesn't Not Work At All
4. Tuner Window Scratched Up From Loose Debris During Shipping
5. Speaker Wires Will Need Replacement
6. Ferrite Core (MW/LW) Antenna Damaged
7. Speaker Grille Dented
8. Faceplate And Grips Bent
9. Not Sure If Lights Would Work If Bulbs Replaced. (Funny Voltage Reading)
10.Tuning/Battery Meter Damaged
11.Possible Mains Output Damage (Which May Explain Bad Left Channel)
12.Something Rattling Around In One Speaker

What it would do:

1. Power Up
2. Switches Seemed To Respond But Could Not Test All Fully Since Cassette Dead And No DIN Cable On Hand
3. FM Section Works Well
4. Right Channel Strong
5. Guessing Mic And Headphones Inputs OK But It Takes Sepcialized Equipment I Don't Have

oldskool, I'm soory to hear of your damaged shipment...this really sux! Good luck with your claim, I hope they come through, and do the right thing.

same thing happened here, I have a studio1 and it was packed properly, still got here damaged with the AM antenna all jacked up. its been here for months and i refuse to look at it......makes me mad.....but what can you do!

Don't want to start a riot here, but that is some of the worst packaging I have ever seen, considering what it was holding.

The Telefunken is no joke. It is big and it is VERY VERY heavy.

This packaging was nowhere near sufficient, and I am not at all surprised that it arrived like that.

This is like sending a brick encased in a loaf of bread.

HIFITOM should know a lot better than that.

I think this is an utter disgrace.

I hope you get things sorted out Oldskool. How did the PC-55 arrive for hifiTom?

I totally agree with Beatbox. I remember a seller from China that tried to ship a Conion like this was ripped to shreds here for his lack of adequate packing. This is almost as bad. I'm sorry for your damaged box, oldskool.

The JVC arrived in one piece. Here are photos of it before it was packed. I also videoed it before I packed it.

As it would be shipped. I left the steel plates in place to protect the sides and have fewer pieces having a chance of moving. Anyone who has one knows it has eight small bolts and five screws in each side so it goes nowhere.

22CM(9 inches) starting with a 3/4" solid foam piece in the bottom. Stiff packaging paper and peanuts to fill any gaps as it settled during shipping.

The amp/deck sections were double foam and bubble wrapped. The speakers were bubble and foam wrapped also. The handle and wires were bubble wrapped.

The unit was set in the box on the 22cm (9") material. One speaker was set at the rear, the other at the front as the steel plates would protect the sides of the unit. They were also placed grilles up since most jabs come from the sides and bottom if it happens. I then jammed it with stiff packing paper and packing peanuts, Capped it the same as the bottom, and bubble wrapped the cap.

Then I topped it off with more stiff packing paper and news paper as well.

I set the address lable on top in a plastic sleeve so that it would not get wet and to ensure it would be clear and legible.

The marked the box "fragile", "this side up" with clearly marked arrows and maked "top".

And she arrived in one piece. To be fair he did tell me that it powered up and functions worked but no sound came from the speakers. But nothing was broken or loose as far as I know so I'm at a loss as to what happened. I'm waiting to hear from him to find out. Hereit is on his shelf. Look lower left.


Please note, I am not angry with Tom. If he felt like it was well packed (When he sent the photos I didn't know he was neccesarily finished.) then this is a lesson learned. Unfortunately a rough lesson I'm a part of. I don't know what will happen from here. DHL may say it wasn't sufficiently packed, I don't know. I know that I will have to put push pull clips on the unit for sure for on the speakers since I have no idea where to get these plugs anymore. I also spoke with my tech and he said that the unit is 30yrs old and he couldn't guarantee anything, especially finding parts.

Oldskool, sorry to hear what has happened. That's painful to see for all of us I'm sure.

I cant even begin to say how pissed I would be to get something in that poor of condition. Hope all goes better.

Hey Freddie, for what it's worth Beatbox posted a service manual for the Telefunken 1M a while back. You can search for his post or you can click on the "manuals and more" link in my signature. I hope it all works out for you.

When they send a DHL overseas, you have to make the claim with the US post office. As long as it was sent insured, you will be ok. They WILL take the unit! you will NOT get it back. It will take 2-3 months for get the money for it.

Maybe that's why my postman sent me the other route. We go to church together and he knows my hobby. To get one and lose it over this would make me go "Postal"! Sounds like I may be better off just fixing it...I don't wan't to lose it and hope I get another one for the price of a trade. For what it's insured for I'm not sure I could replace it with shipping in it's original condition (near mint) but how many of these are on THIS side of the pond? (Ira's nonwithstanding, IF I had an insurance check he'd charge me another grand on top of it! ) It's not totally gone. I'm sure with some TLC I can get it back up and running. Whaddaya think? Claim or Rebuild?

just wanna chime in and say Hi-fi Tom sent me a box in similar packing, and it arrived perfectly. i think some mail workers are psychotic losers. i think they they take their rage at their status in life out, by abusing other peoples sh**.

As I noted earlier, I'm not angry with Tom. Not the tiniest bit. It is apparent it had some rough handling. Do I think it could have been packed better? Yes. Do I want to lose it, wait four months for a check, then wait who knows how long to get another in near mint like this one was? No. You can see how I packed the JVC and why it was packed the way it was. I will give the USPS credit in that they send stuff "DIRECT" air only, and not through three or four hands. I am glad yours arrived without a scratch but mine had a lot further to go.

Oldskool, there is no silver lining in this but you are handling it very well. I hope you get it worked out to your satisfaction.

I agree about the packaging not being sufficient. Now if Tom had double boxed it that would have dramatically increased the odds of the box making a safe trip.

Thanks MB. I have learned in my nearly forty years on this planet to not worry about that which I cannot control, and learn from my travels. Getting angry solves nothing and doesn't get it fixed any faster in hese type of transactions. I have the schematics, thanks to Bobby and others on the site. Hopefully I can get her up and running soon. (Anyone wanna donate a tuner board? ) I think the worst part is actually finding replacemen cords for the speakers since it uses a plug versus clips and the leads are shot so I may haveto modify it ta accept push/pull clips typically seen.

Cracked PC boards can be fixed. With a little bit of glue, some sandpaper, alcohol, a soldering gun, and A LOT of patience you can repair the circuit paths. That is unless the board is totally trashed.

It'll be me, the 'Funken and some Glenlivet, until the scotch sets in then it will be me and the scotch! I know the amps are okay. I think there is a ground issue somwhere, I just need to find it. The cassette I have yet to get to. BTW, does it take one fuse or two in 110-120v? If anyone knows?

Just a bit of advice.
Put down the soldering iron and unplug it before you finish your second glass of scotch. Your liable to wake up in the morning and find out you created a whole new circuit that Telefunken didn't put in the schematic.

In that case please update the schematic and tell me what brand of Scotch you were drinking.

i've got a current insurance claim with DHL right now for a Sharp GF-777 they smashed up real bad. Totally agree its a pain in the ass. First time out of twenty shipments a radio has got broken with them. So they are still much better than UPS
