THE BIG TWO

GM + Chrysler = ???

That's an interesting thought.

I hope not. Chrysler has been more of an innovator in the U.S. auto inducstry because they are smaller and has more talent than GM & Ford combined. They would just get absorbed and we would see the end ofthe Hemi, Challenger, Charger, 300C, Dakota and Ram. GM would find a way to turn the Jeep brand into a peice of crap ala AMC days, and get rid of minivans to convince people they need more SUV's. Roll Eyes

The only thing good from GM is the Corvette, Cadillac and the powertrain setups. That they do well. But that's about it.

I Agree Chrysler's been on a roll for the past 5 years or so design-wise! I don't understand how they could be in such poor shape when they have some of the best looking vehicles on the road today. Confused The "Baby Bentley" (300) was prolly the best selling luxury sedan for a minute - It most certainly was the best looking!

The new Challenger... Cool

WTF?!? Confused

As for GM, you're right on the money! I Agree The only thing that's good (and will always be good) in the Chevy line is the Corvette! I do like that Chevy pickup truck that looks like a concept vehicle tho...

When that Cadillac CTS coupe drops next year... Cool

I don't know how GM can possible buy anything. Aren't they broke and lay people off left and right because they have no money?

Yeah, but Chrysler has lots of money. A merger would be a way for GM to get their hands on it.

Interesting....so, possibly a Camaro RT? Or Challenger SS/Z28? Just kidding. This will def. be historic fer sher.

What I wondered was, what's in it for Cerberus, Chrysler's owner? Well, according to the Wall Street Journal (reported in the CNN story linked above), here's how it would go down:

Cerberus Capital Management, the private equity firm that owns 80.1 percent of Chrysler and 51 percent of GMAC Financial Services, proposed trading Chrysler's automotive operations to GM. The Journal said Cerberus would receive GM's remaining 49 percent stake in GMAC.

Apparently the current lending crisis and financial meltdown has stalled any action on this... at least for now.

I always thought that Chrysler was in the worst shape - financially - than Ford or GM.
I do hope they all stay in business.

According to this article in the New York Times,

Chrysler has cut thousands of jobs, slashed production and closed plants to try to balance the impact of a 25 percent drop in United States sales so far this year. But Chrysler has a substantial amount of cash, which probably would be of major interest to G.M.

As a privately held company, Chrysler is not required to disclose its financial results. In August, however, Cerberus said that Chrysler had about $11 billion in cash reserves.

So GM will just have to pay 11 billion dollars more for Chrysler - it probably doesnt have that kind of money.

I just read on yahoo news:
"If you put two auto companies together, both that are losing money, both that are losing market share, you've just got an auto company that's losing market share faster and losing more money." - Erich Merkle, an auto industry analyst with Crowe Horwath LLP
