PP becomes ONLY pay option on ebay

jaredscottfla - 2008-10-10 17:40

Just another chg to the 'new ' ebay
No longer can buyers pay with ck's or mo's.
No longer can sellers accept them,pp only.
Is this good or bad? Whatcha Think?(Goes into effect end of Oct.)

fatdog - 2008-10-10 18:02

I'm looking through announcements and can't find that one anywhere. Do you have a link to it? Confused

masterblaster84 - 2008-10-10 18:17

That's how just about all of my deals are paid for when I buy or sell so it probably wouldn't affect me much. I would like to have the option for CK or MO though, seems a little restrictive without those options.

I agree with fatdog, I don't recall that announcement.

Though restrictive, (and profiteering since eBay and PayPal are one and th same), you do eliminate some risk when using PP. If you send someone a MO or check eBay can't (or won't) be much help tracing or tracking. We've heard the horror stories related to checks and MO's. Smile

jaredscottfla - 2008-10-10 19:21

true...i just think the flexibility to be able to sell and accept ck's or mo's and the avail to buy with ck's and mo's was cool. It's just more gleeze for ebay, their recent fee hikes have led alot of sellers fleeing to other sites.
When ur the biggest kid on the block,u just don't care,pp ran roughshod over the competion,Billpoint, bidpay, firepay, are just some that Pp either bought out,or just ran out of buissness,i think competion is a good thing,to have a total monopoly in the long run never does the consumer good,it always pads the bottom line of the buissness. For me personally,i don't sell that much anymore and i buy very infrequently, mostly little stuff,i like amazon alot. i really don't care what ebay does but if u watch the video they say it's a protection for their customers,i honestly think like the fee hikes it's just another way to pad their bottom line!
Don't know about the European ebay sites but Ebay.ca,and Ebay.Au are following suit,it's not just ebay.com or a Usa situation.

EBay stopped insuring check/money order payments a while ago, so I've reluctantly been using Paypal for everything.

On the negative side, the new rule forces everyone to use and pay for eBay's payment service, but on the positive side, all transactions will be insured, and, as long a bidder stays within the coverage limit, s/he won't need to worry about losing money.

I have lost a large amount of coin through using paypall there usless if it goes belly up youre screwd the only safe way is using a credit card they do all the chasing no mo well thats the end of my ebay then cuz i pay for everything using money orders.

walkgirl - 2008-10-10 21:20

WHen they would put that thrugh on ebay.nl or ebay.de
there would only be 25% of sellers left Big Grin

fatdog - 2008-10-10 21:41

This is what I find disturbing:
quote:
...if you accept checks or money orders from these customers a reasonably small percentage of the time, this will not be a violation of the new payments policy. However, we will not allow abuse of the new policy and will be watching for sellers who accept a significant amount of prohibited payments.

Ebay tried this on here in Australia a couple of months ago, not sure if they gave up or are putting it in effect here at the end of October as well.

The cheapest and most effective way for people to pay currently on .au ebay is bank deposit, as our banking system allows for simple direct deposit into other accounts at other banks with no extra charges. Of course ebay don't make any money on that form of payment so they said it'd be Paypal and COD only.

Ebay's argument is always that theres no ebay security/policing of direct deposits, but I can't see things changing if they can still allow COD theres nothing stopping the seller giving out their bank details behind ebay's back. Theres no security offered by ebay through COD or bank deposits currently so this wouldn't make any difference at all to current 'risk factor' of using them.

I know ebay were taken to court over trying to force everyone to use paypal here as it breaches some anti-monopolising laws apparently, but I've not followed it to see what eventuated.

For the record, I've done 150+ transactions as a buyer on ebay using predmominantly direct deposit and not had any problems with sellers that weren't resolved in a couple of days.

It'll be very interesting to see what happens with this situation in the coming months and how much (if any) flare ups occur over it.

Rock On.

When I started with eBay back in '99 I did lots of M.O. transactions only, but then paypal came along and its been 99% paypal ever since (other than the couple of boxes I bought from ebay.de the last year)

I'm more upset about the Canadian Grand Prix being dropped from next years' Formula One championship.

tshorba - 2008-10-12 16:58

ebay in au was taken to the ACCC (consumer watchdog) and found that using only paypal breached Aus consumer law, so they had to allow bank deposit.. I think it had to do with the fact of the charges on paypal and that they are the same company..

jaredscottfla - 2008-10-12 17:08

Smile well,i for one am not sad ebay lost in that case, nice to see. Big Grin

Welll another thing not do be overlooked is the limit on shipping charges.Good for a buyer but not so good for sellers.Basically they are saying if it cost more to ship it's your lost.
EBAY
Do the maximum shipping costs include handling costs?
Yes. Handling costs are included in the maximum amounts.

EBAY:
Why are you setting limits on shipping charges lower than my actual costs to ship?
We based our maximum shipping & handling charges on recent transaction data of what sellers are charging and what buyers have told us is reasonable. We know that what buyers consider to be reasonable will be less than sellers' actual costs in some cases. We believe that by offering buyers at least one shipping option that they deem reasonable, sellers will increase their overall sales and conversion.

In other words it,s okay for E Bay sellers to loose a few bucks or cents. But we at E Bay are still making money either way KASH ING... Sellers will increase their overall sales and conversion even if it narrows there profit margin.E BAY still make money even if you don't.
