I shot a suspect with a boombox.

thafuzz - 2009-03-18 20:31

So, I was at the Sheriff's Range today to train with 6 other agencies on 'active shooter' scenarios, 'movement to contact' and building clearings. I'm moving though the course, with all the flash bang grenades, smoke, sirens screaming role players and fire alarms in my ears. I rush into this room and what do I see? Three bad guys, one holding a poor boombox hostage. I did what any self respecting boombox cop would do. THAFUZZ had to cap a fool! Big Grin All in a days work. I was shocked that they had these and had to get a few extra target copies. What'ya think?

Well believe it or not, I think this is not a good look. No doubt does it try to villify the boombox culture. The loud, trouble making youth with a radio is or must be a bad guy. With that said, it's the moving target at a police training facility? No bueno!!

You have to forgive me in my ideas on this. I'm in NYC and I KNOW there are good cops and bad cops. I also think there are cops who definatly dont belong on the force. Those who don't have the "3rd eye" to see and feel whats going on. Also, some with the lack of training to even begin to handle a situation where nessacery force is to be used.

Why not just have three black guys with rope gold around the neck? Wait, thats RUN DMC. (I give that police training center a big thumbs down.)

I kinda gotta agree with Petey on this one... Not a good association at all.

Were there any of your colleagues around, that know you're into boomboxes? Did they make any comments to you?

You know, I was going to go for a walk around my neighborhood blasting some Cameo or Parlaiment this afternoon. But, because we have a dozen or so cops around here, I now don't think its such a good idea. I might trigger an involuntary reflex!!! Wink

masterblaster84 - 2009-03-19 07:37

I can't remember the last time I saw any pics, video or movies with a bunch of bad guys running around with guns and boomboxes. No No

jvc.floyd - 2009-03-19 07:43

in death wish 2 bronson blasted a dude with a boombox ,thats about the only time i remember seeing that happen in a movie.

jvc.floyd - 2009-03-19 07:45

it was lawrence fishburne carrying the boombox and bronson shot him right through the boombox.

oldskool69 - 2009-03-19 07:49

OK everyone...

Let's try to take a lighthearted look at this.

First off, as great a cop as I know Adam is, surely his training is outdated. I mean, how many criminals are you going to confront in 2009 ruuning around with a booombox?!?!? Now maybe if he were running with a buch of iPods falling out his pockets...Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

Second, the box he's carrying appears to be one of Sanyo's disasterous cheap plasticky sorry sounding models from the late eighties.

Perhaps he bought it on eBay and was so pissed about the misleading description "Great Bassy Sound", that he and some witnesses were merely storming eBay's headquarters and demanding a refund! Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

Now that's funny OS!!!! Laugh Out Loud

petey.awol - 2009-03-19 08:24

Radio Raheem was killed in Do The Right Thing because he wouldnt "Turn that **** off!!! I cant hear myself think!!"

Beat Street - Lee was arrested for breaking in the city subways with a boombox.

In general it's assumed that the radio carrying youth is up to no good, not working, disturbing people etc etc. You know what I'm saying. Maybe I'm in too urban of a city for others to make the connection I'm trying to put across.

walkgirl - 2009-03-19 08:31

I do believe that is jens agentorange and panasonicfan in that picture! Big Grin Leaving Tap Toes

No you're not, and yes I undedrstand. I was "there" too. I was chased by police, mall cops, people in the 'hood who didn't wan't to hear the noise coming out of the blaster, etc.

My point is this, in this day and age, the image is archaic at best. The idea of a criminal, let alone the idea of a blond haired white guy, totally:

A. Blows the sterotype everyone normally thinks about with this image. By the way I'm black and would not be offended if it were a black guy as it would be just as stupid to envision anyone of any race wanting to lug around a boombox nowadays and try to make a gunpoint getaway. (Boomboxes and Hip-Hop go hand in hand so it would not be absurd to have the black guy holding the box just as it would not be absurd to have white guys committing crimes while holding a skateboard.)

And...

B. That they actually used this image for the stereotypical criminal an officer might face is amusing. It's history at best, goofy at it's worst. As a kid, I had all friends from all races get run off for all kinds of things besides just boomers. My metal head freinds for example, were nothing more than a bunch of dopers who were always trying to steal beer. Even though they were metal heads, the dope part that wasn't true. Nor was stealing the beer. Their image just scared people.

Bottom Line:

It's outdated and out of touch. To be honest, I think most people nowadays (at least around me) seem to appreciate these boomers now and find them interesting.

Smile

Your coming in loud and clear here in the UK Petey Awol.

"Maybe I'm in too urban of a city for others to make the connection I'm trying to put across."
I can assure you your not. You have a very good point and i was pleased to see it voiced.

Just imagine if it was a Louis Vuitton case. Or heavens forbid a Harrods bag!

Letters to the Times, mention in the house (of commons)someone in the Tower.

Sorry guys, I just got in from my last day of getting battered abused and getting shot myself on this 'Shoot/Don't shoot' scenarios. Guys and gals, this is all focused on rescue scenarios like the tragic Columbine massacres, German school shooting, etc. The training is made to be the worst they can put us through and experience. We had no time to evaluate or critique targets. JT, Penge & petey, you guys over analized this. This paper target is simply something that caught my eye only because I saw a boombox in the least place I'd ever expect to see one. I thought I'd share with all my friends. I meant this to be light hearted and all in fun as it's only a piece of paper. Nothing more. Oldy, thanks for keeping this in perspective. Goodnight amigos Smile
