Rare National-Panasonic

viennasound - 2009-02-17 11:06

Just seen at ebay.
Not a boombox, but strange and beauty looking.
And check the price where it is till now. Eek

RF 9000

baby.boomer - 2009-02-17 11:28

Absolutely top of the top of the line. And rare as can be. Assuming it works (can't read German), worth whatever it sells for.

redbenjoe - 2009-02-17 11:30

sinister has 4 of these.

skippy1969 - 2009-02-17 11:49

WOW,thats a nice unit and a lot of CHA CHING !!! Eek

info:

tpr - 2009-02-17 12:34

I wonder if it reaches the 3000$ border....

That seems to be a real "collectors-fight"

masterblaster84 - 2009-02-17 13:13

That's a wickedly cool radio but the price is mind blowing. Eek

baby.boomer - 2009-02-17 15:49

As this page of DXing.com shows, the original price was $2900-$3800 and used (who knows how many years ago?) (probably before eBay) price is given as $1000-$1600.

Then there's the value of the paperwork and case.

baby.boomer - 2009-02-20 02:53

I love this radio, but I think I'll pass and use the money to FEED MY FAMILY FOR A YEAR!!!

baddboybill - 2009-02-20 08:18

Yeah and pay some bills maybe a few mortgage payments Laugh Out Loud

It's a radio for gods sake, I thought some people lost their minds paying $2,000 for an M90 but this is a mind F**K. Eek

You can buy a decent used car or even a really nice motorcycle for less than this radio. Confused
Laugh Out Loud

panasonic.fan - 2009-02-20 08:43

There really is nothing to compare it too in our world. Perhaps the Telefunken M1, but that isn't even as nice as this.

I guess that's a blessing in a way.

Example wanted?
All 3 scooters for example for this price. Nod Yes

+ a few flea boxes... Big Grin

panasonic.fan - 2009-02-20 09:01

Sure, but try fitting them on the corner of your desk Wink Good example, in this economy scooters are just slightly more practical.

Yes, but a motocycle can't receive signals from Jupiter.

panasonic.fan - 2009-02-20 13:19

Neither can the radio by itself.

baby.boomer - 2009-02-20 15:04

Just as well. I hear radio broadcasting on Jupiter is terrible... mostly sounds of the Giant Spot and sports-talk. Worthless.

Truth is... I've wanted a 9000 (or even an 8000) since I first got interested in dx-ing, about a dozen years ago. Talk about your Holy Grails! But both of them have always been out of reach for me, and, judging from the bidding on this one, will keep getting farther away.

In the meantime, I've settled for a humble 5000 (along with a couple of others), which is a decent receiver, fairly easy to find in good condition, and affordable. But in moments of wild abandon (and exhaustion), I still dream that about owning this "King of Radio."

baby.boomer - 2009-02-20 15:05

Interesting comment and replies on Usenet.

Not all complimentary, either. Lots of "nice" and "ahead of its time," but also "overpriced" and "overweight." Value seems to be more as a collectible than a performer.

Crazy where people spent the money on... Leaving

fatdog - 2009-02-22 06:50

That's insane!! That's the equivalent of $6,824.40 USD! Red Face Eek

baddboybill - 2009-02-22 08:29

Laugh Out Loud Thats an absolute no go I Agree.

jvc.floyd - 2009-02-22 14:30

i would say who ever bought that radio was probably waiting and saving just for that radio to appear for sale ,ive never seen that model and most likely the buyer is a world class electronics collector,at least now i can say ive seen it all probably wont see to many radio's sell at that price agian for a while if ever.

baby.boomer - 2009-02-22 16:07

I can't imagine shipping this gem. The cost!! The risk!! It boggles the mind!

gluecifer - 2009-02-22 16:39

Well, that certainly put's my mild case of boombox-insanity in perspective then!

Nice to have a 'but it's not like I spent five grand like some other collectors have!' reference point.

Rock On.
