another cool old reciever

billpc55 - 2009-04-14 19:11

i got this fairly rare pioneer black face reciever today for pretty much nothing, well five bucks.
it is a sx440 nothing to wild in the power dept that is for sure. i think it tops out at twelve watts per side. still it sounds really good.
its like new. they had it off in a corner marked not working recyling. i took a closer look and saw the fuse on the back left channel was blown.
i took it home for five bucks and threw a fuse in it. i didnt even clean it,it is really clean and the wood case is pretty mint too.
i really love the looks of this reciever and paired with the old klipsch 1.5 bookshelves it is a really nice little bedroom stereo.
i have more powerful recievers, but this one really looks fantastic.
it looks really cool in the dark. almost like a mini macintosh stereo.
i think most likely someone bought speakers that were too power hungry for it back in the day and blew the fuse and it sat in the closet for the next thirty eight years.
i mean this one is in unreal shape. all the lights work and well its just really nice.
dont let the small output fool you this little unit can get pretty loud.
it sounds better than the marantz i have of the same vintage and output range.

great find , bill

pioneer was one of the 'cant go wrong' brands Smile

dont remember them ever down-designing quality to fit a discounters price -
or selling their good name to lesser makers

i really like this one for its cool looking front panel. it seems to be pretty nicely made to.
i still cannot understand why someone would be scared of changing a fuse on something like this. i mean i is just so odd. there isnt even any dust on the inside of this unit. it really is nice.

Back in the dayz one of my cousin had the Pioneer 1250 receiver which is now a collectors must have.

That machine was one bad ass he had the Bose 901's hooked to it and man she sounded sweet!

yeah i like those alot. i did come across one of those recently but it was beyond thrashed. i mean i think you could get busted for drug possesion from the ammount of pot resin the thing was coated with. it was to far gone for me to snag.
that model is very nice.
