Dam they waited this long to name them into the Hall Of Fame.

I'm happy for RUN DMC making it, but these Board members that run the Hall Of Fame must have kept their heads in the sand.

I have one question are the Sugarhill Gang in the Hall Of Fame?

No, they are not. Run-DMC is only the second rap group ever inducted. The first was Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five.

ford93 - 2009-01-15 07:54

Thats ashame the Sugarhill Gang were the first that started it all!

I bet before Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five being named into the Hall Of Fame, Blondie was first with that stupid song (Rapture) which was nominated as best Rap song over SugarHill's Rappers Delight! Mad

SugarHill's Rappers Delight!

I've got the original full-lenght LP on vinyl, plus the 45rpm 12" single. Unfortunately, the single plays scratchy as he11.

I've also got the first Grandmaster Flash album on vinyl, too!

Kurtis Blow was one of those early rap poineers, too. (yup, got his first album on vinyl, too)

I found them all for $0.25 in a flea market record sellers bin!!! SCORE!!!

And while her rapping is a bit cheezy, I actually think RAPTURE is a pretty cool sounding track. It definitely works on dance floors. I've dropped that in the middle of a house set a couple of times and the crowd loved it! (yea, got that one on vinyl too, including some newer remix versions).

Wouldnt Kurtis Blow, The Cold Crush Brothers, and even the Funky 4 + 1 predate the Sugarhill Gang?

Not to mention DJ Kool Herc's entire contribution to the block party scene, predates Sugarhill Gang.

Just my $0.02 .

fatdog - 2009-01-15 14:23

While Kool Herc could be considered by some to be the pioneer, it was Sugarhill Gang who had the first commercial hit record. By the way, 'Rapper's Delight' was written by Grandmaster Caz of the Cold Crush Brothers.

Caz didn't write the entire song, however, they - Big Bank Hank in particular - used a big chunk of his lyrics and never paid him for it or gave him any credit. Frown

You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandmaster_Caz

Grandmaster Caz still has beef with Big Bank Hank to this day.

Hell yeah!!

And to celebrate, check this sweetness out right about NOW!!!!

I feel privileged to be one of the relatively few people in the UK to have seen them live.

Pioneers & IMHO, the best hip hop act there has ever been.
...& probably ever will be, considering the state of hip hop these days...
