Playing with the big "boombox"

928gts - 2008-08-26 15:16

Finally moved into to college and finally have the sound system sounding good. Check out this big guy...

The setup is as follows:
BSR EQ 3000 10 band per channel EQ
Onkyo TX 905 R1 receiver with 70WPC
Sony DE595 receiver with 100WPC
Fisher STV-430MA 3 ways with 15" main drivers(Its missing a dust cap,I know. Don't give me grief,I received these suckers for free!)
Cerwin Vega VS100 3 ways with 10" main drivers
Jensen Model 1230 3 ways with 12" main drivers
Voice Of Music Model 91 2 ways with 8" main drivers
Technic L32 2 way with a 10" main driver

Basically I set out to try and take average mid fi components and make a budget system that would be loud, balanced and very detailed and I think I've succeeded through combining components that are strong in one area but weak in another(as are most mid fi speakers)with components that fill that component's gap so I have each speaker covering each other's weak spots and it sounds really good. For example the Fishers and Vega's have wonderful bass but not that much in terms of mids and highs whereas my Jensen's and Voice Of Musics have laser accurate treble and mids but slightly weak bass.

Every time I move this thing around I need to sit down for a half hour to an hour to retune the system to the room but once I get everything set up it really sings. Its incredibly balanced and powerful. Its hilarious,my Onkyo head has 70WPC and my Fishers are rated at 120W minimum but Onkyos are under rated for sure power wise as it can actually make the Fisher's woofer cones overextend so I need to watch myself.

A lot of close minded audiophiles really crack on an experiment like this but considering I've spent about $250 on everything it I've found it sounds better than systems costing $1,000 or so.

I've got it playing some Bad Balance(Russian Hip Hop)and damn does it sound sweet. Bass is perfectly controlled but I can feel it through my bed frame, vocals are clear as day and I can hear the drums just fine which is relatively hard to do well with a speaker system. I have it EQ'd rather flat with just a slight bump in the upper mids and treble and in the low bass range(the room is so small that I need to compensate for the fact that the fully extended bass wave isn't hitting me)

But really, some day if you're bored try seeing what you can do with budget components, you might be surprised.

928gts - 2008-08-26 17:00

Actually I have a plenty of room in my room. The picture is a bit deceiving. :P

Nice Set up! I especially like how, with ALL those ginormous speakers, you happen to keep a set of headPhones at the ready Wink

Actually thats my pair of Sony MDR V6's that I use through my Hong Kong manufacture Tube Amplifier for when I listen to my MP3 player through line out or through any other source. The full model name of the amp is the HiFi RT-6P13P and its really a gorgeous and neutral sounding tube amp, well worth the $240 I spent on it.

erniejade - 2008-08-27 12:07

you sometimes just can't beat tubes! My CD player is a Jolida tubbed cd player. Outstanding. My phono preamp is a pro-ject tube box II SE again outstanding especailly with my denon DL160 cart. This combo slaughtered my goldring1042 cart at 1/2 the price. One day I would love to find the sunfire tube preamp to go with my sunfire signature 625 X 2 amp. but for now, the tube on the cd player and the phono pre works great!!

928 - my daughter is of univ/rochester -
is that where you're at ?

That looks alot like my room back when I was in the Air Force. My roomate and I had two complete systems side by side. His was a Denon Preamp/poweramp/tuner system hooked up to Infinity Kappa-7 speakers and mine was a Sansui Preamp/poweramp/tuner system hooked up to JBL L-100t's. We'd link the two systems together via RCA cables and rock the entire floor. We had some massive parties and got into trouble on a regular basis.

I actually still have the JBLs.

Nice rig, 928! I think you need some Tannoys and another amp, though Wink

You know I DO need another amp! I've been looking around for some proper old school Advents just to have them but I'll put Tannoys on the list Smile

redbenjoe - 2008-08-27 19:36

you must be brilliant -- just to have been accepted to that great school --

their standards are even higher than s2g !! Smile

928gts - 2008-08-27 21:35

I'm awful with math but I'm a book and writing fiend. I love writing so much which is quite a strange thing considering how most people from RPI abhor writing altogether. Even so I'm still an electronics aficionado and I love building radios and other sorts of circuits. I love analyzing audio and working with audio componentry. Even though I'm not really a math genius at all my hobbies make it so that I fit in really well here.

redbenjoe - 2008-08-27 21:48

what year are you in up there --
and is writing your major ?

I'm a junior and I wish English was a major but I believe I can only minor in it. Needless to say I'm currently majoring in Science,Technology and Society Studies which is basically being creative and figuring out inventive ways to bring complex technologies into something a consumer can use. It requires use of the creative side of my brain and involves a lot of writing which is my strong suit. I love this place,I have a group of friends and we all own vintage Japanese motorcycles and on weekends we all bring them up to my one friend's apartment, line them up outside and polish and fix them together. I really doubt I could find such unique people at any other school.

redbenjoe - 2008-08-27 22:29

yup -- as far as i can remember RPI had a tremendous reputation --
make sure you get into their grad programs -

so you can stay a few years longer Smile
