Cool looking speakers....Did I get ripped off?

jovie - 2008-08-14 21:45

I found this set of speakers at the thriftstore for really cheap.Although there was no equipment available to test them,I decided to get them anyway. As I was on my way to work,I put them into a cold storage area when I arrived to keep them out of the heat.I decided to wait a day before bringing them home with me.

Arriving home without the speakers,I decided to google them to see what came up.To my surprise,I'm finding links telling me they are fake and without the necessary parts inside to make them work. However,I did find at least one legitimate looking web site listing replacement drivers for the "Acoustic Response" make. Now I am afraid of what I may find out when I finally hook them up.Does anyone know anything about these?

Hopefully, you got them REALLY cheap. I remember seeing some listed on the local Craigslist. After doing some searching, I found they are basically trash. Hopefully, they work out for you though. They do indeed look cool.

Oh dear.
My condolences, Jovie.

These are THE classic white-van speakers.
This scam is so famous, it's got it's own comprehensive Wikipedia entry
Trouble is, they still exist all over, as you've found out. Still, at least you didn't get conned out of 100s. You just picked up something from Thrift - no shame in that Smile

My brother in-law fell for this scam in the UK (this thing is global), buying a pair new. He was all excited about them & knowing I was into my HiFi, told me the whole story. I smelt a rat, but kept an open mind until I heard them.
They were junk, truly.

At best they dissappoint. At worst they'll damage what you connect them to.

The boxes are made from fairly thin chipboard, so maybe they could be used for some DIY B-box project?

...I'd just love for one of these 4rseholes to try & sell me something like this - it would make my day.
