asdexander - 2008-08-11 06:11

I thought it was quite amazing when they fired some fireworks to make them form footsteps heading to the stadium.

Thumbs Way UP !!! did you see this race last night ??? this was Terrific !!!!
Lezak lifts U.S. in ‘best ever’ relay

I agree with this completely. This circus is just there for one thing , to look good for foreign investers and nothing else.

walkgirl - 2008-08-11 09:45

I do like the sports very much, I do not watch
it for the investors, I watch it for the althletes!

redbenjoe - 2008-08-11 09:59

I Agree 100% with walkgirl --

us spectators could care less about the politics and the commercial circus --

these are some spectacular athletes that have trained most of their lives for these exciting events --

anyone who was lucky enough to see that swimming relay race last night --

KNOWS !! Smile

walkgirl - 2008-08-11 10:09

Cool

There are not much Dutch athletes swimming this time,
that idiotm Pieter van den Hoogenband does not compete on the 200 meter, only the 100 meter Confused

- 2008-08-11 11:09

I wanna see the poland power lifter chicks.
Meowwwww Eek

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-11 12:24

Cool The Us Men's Swimming relay was pretty awesome, especially satisfying When The French Trash Talked and had to eat their words! Laugh Out Loud
76% on Espn.com Think Michael Phelps will win 8 Golds for the New record. Mark Spitz's Record Seemed Pretty Invincable But Phelps Looks like The real deal. Cool

ford93 - 2008-08-11 12:48

I would be on your side autoreverser, but it's not the Ahtlete's fault. I will watch it because like Red said these individuals worked so hard for this once in a lifetime dream. I do however blame the Gov.'s for not doing a better job on human rights. I wrote on another thread how the poor were getting their houses bulldozed in China so they can build Olympic facilities. Those homeowners were in tears and the media only reported it one time only. I heard a couple and their daughter which is a participant in the Olympics were attacked by knife crazed person. The Father died in this attack. That is a sign that things are not sitting well with the ordinary people of China.

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-11 13:16

Frown The Knife Weiling Nut,SPECIFICALLY targeted Foreigners.
He Happened To MURDER The Father in Law and Severly Injured The Mother in Law of The us Men's Vollyball coach.
I don't Think it was an expression of frustration with the chinese govt(as abismal as their record is on Human rights,.Tibet, darfur Etc) Just simply a NUT who wanted to Kill foreigners,A Disturbed Person Unfortunatly That can happen just about anywhere. Frown

jt - 2008-08-12 06:22

I thought the opening ceremony was quite spectacular indeed. They did say that the footstep fireworks were done in advance and were virtual... only the final footstep next to the stadium was real. I still thought it was very well done. Seeing as how each olympics try to out-do their predecessor, I'm sure the Vancouver and London olympic committees are re-thinking their ceremonies...

As for the idiot that stabbed the tourists, I agree with Jared... That could happen anywhere. Remember Atlanta 1996? I was at oplympic park 10 mins before that bomb went off! Let's hope that type of B.S. doesn't repeat... and that this stabbing incident is the only such thing that happens in Beijing.

appleknocker - 2008-08-12 12:23

Thumbs Up! I love the olympics. Even sports like rowing and badminton that I would never care about, I watch closely in the olympics. The Chinese have gone all out trying to make these Olympics great and their fans are gracious and cheer for all the great perfromances. The swimming relay was the greatest swim race I have ever watched and our mens gymnastics team getting the bronze was great also.

peter.griffin - 2008-08-13 07:33

I'm from Canada, I don't even know why they send athletes to the olympics. We never do anything. The poor athelets are so underfunded here. They have to work full-time, plus train. CRAZY.

I'm cheering for Phelp's, and the US basketball teamSmile

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-13 10:25

SmileHey Carvin,
Canada does better in the winter olympics
Have u guys medaled in anything yet? Confused
Phelps looks like he's gonna do it he allready has 5 golds in beijing,in 5 races all with world records. He's now the winningest olympic athelete ever.
I read on the web Mark Spitz was not invited by the ioc or the us olympic commitee to go to beijing,i think that's weak

peter.griffin - 2008-08-13 10:57

nope nothing yet. Phelps is doing better then all of Canada. And I don't think Canada will even get 8 golds as a countryFrown

Winter olympics, haha, only in hockey. Like I mentioned, Canada doesn't fund it's athletes enough to compete at the national level. Sad, not sure what the government here is thinking. And they actually wanted to host the olympics in Toronto. Hah!Smile

autoreverser - 2008-08-14 14:27

...ok, now some other perspective, as i'm not able to ignore those olympics completely - and this is my personal opinion - they're games of fraud, as i do believe that most of those athlets there are so full of drugs (...not the oldfashioned amphetamines, testosterones, epo etc, what i mean is 'hightech-drugs' to have some kinda doping nobody is able to find out yet, they only test'em for what they know...). just saw some pics in the news of some swimmer-guys - they looked extremely unreal, even their behaviour was strange, reminding me of us guys faces in those times many years ago when we used to swallow almost everything that made us trip....

nobody can tell me that 20 years ago eastern european and russian athlets were doped close to death to break all kinda records, and now 'undoped' athlets are breaking those guys world-records by SECONDS (...and those are eternities in top-sports !)

not woth to waist my time any more with that.

olympics are a farce, the 'athlets' should be allowad to have their pharmacists as sponsores on their outfit....

that's my personal opinion, don't wanna spoil anybodies fun, sorry if i did...

peter.griffin - 2008-08-14 16:06

Yo Auto, I totally agree. Everyone is on some kind of drugs, they should just allow it. Then it will be a level playing field.

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-14 17:48

No No i disagree that EVERYONE IS ON DRUGS Totally Not True, but everyone has a Right To their Opnion. In this case i just don't agree,U guys Think The Chinese Men or Women's Gymnastics,Or Michael Phelps,Or The Tennis Pro's are Doping? Confused Nope. I admit it Might Be more prevelent in Sports Like Track and Field And Weight Lifting,But i believe The Majority of Athletes are clean, and do it the right way, maybe i'm being Naive, but i Honestly Hope and Think u guys are off on this one. Smile

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-14 17:50

what about sports that nobody talks about, like air pistol shooting, equestrian jumping, Big Grin
U think they dope the Horses b4 they jump! Laugh Out Loud

ford93 - 2008-08-14 22:32

What an inspiration these girls from the womens gymnastic Nastia Liukin (Gold) and Shawn Johnson (Silver). WOW just WOW their performance was just amazing I give props to their coach which is from China. I always loved to see the Gymnastics on the Olympics and this competition was the most difficult for America but we pulled it off for the all around. Mary Lou Retton was among the spectators it was great to see her again.

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-14 22:42

Coolyep very cool, actually the team coach is from china but natasia's personal coach is her dad valery an olympic gold medal champion in seoul. Cool

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-14 22:45

btw autoreverser,there were 2 more athletes dq'd
today for doping,a vietnamese gymanst,a n korean shooter, tested pos for hgv and other banned subs. Mad Frown

Funny that you said that and yes, the Korean was caught for taking drugs that stop you trembling. Indeed an advantage in pistol shooting.

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-15 00:54

I Agree Big Grin Red Face

autoreverser - 2008-08-15 02:50

...you see, i wasn't that wrong with my hypothese...

walkgirl - 2008-08-15 02:57

how can a table tenniser benefit from doping? Confused

peter.griffin - 2008-08-15 05:30

Auto and I are not talking about just "steroids" or "growth" hormones. There's so many different "illegal" substances that olympic athletes try to use to get an "advantage" on the others. And the one's that do try it "naturally" suffer. that's why I think they should just make it legal for all. Then we'll have a level playing field.

oh, and congrat's to those two gymnastsSmile I'm glad they beat China. Can you believe there putting in 13/14 year olds, saying their 16. CrazyFrown

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-15 12:05

I Agree the chinese take sports way too seriuosly... these kids are training at like 4 yrs old? HUH??? Big Grin

peter.griffin - 2008-08-15 12:34

it's all about looking good. They even switched the girl singing their national anthem because the real singer wasn't "cute" enough. unbelievable.

ford93 - 2008-08-15 19:10

Yeah thats not the way to win medals wheres the pride or better yet what ever happened to "let the best man or in this case woman win"! I really would'nt want to win like that because after everything been said and done deep down they know they cheated.

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-16 17:14

Smile Barring a few bumps in the road it's been a pretty good olympics so far,one poor thing today, A swedish Wrestler was Dq'd today,Not for Doping But Poor sportsmanship,he felt he did not lose his match, screamed and berated the officials and took his bronze medal and threw it on the Floor! Frown
The Ioc Stripped Him Of The Bronze Medal and Dissmissed Him From The Games,GOOD FOR THEM! Nod Yes

jt - 2008-08-16 19:31

Yea, that sucked. What a jerk to be so unsportmanlike and disrespectful. I'm sure his family and fellow Swedes will give him a fair round of $hit when he gets home.

I can't believe how many swimming world records are being broken this year!!

Hasn't Michael Phelps' performance been absolutely amazing? To win that 100m Butterfly gold medal by 1/100th of a second yesterday!

On TV just now they showed a series of images from an underwater camera Sports Illustrated apparently has in the pool under those two lanes. The images show the final strokes and you can see Cavich's head is up just before touching the wall. He appears to be looking over at Phelps' lane. Phelps, however, pushed 100% to the end. That glance to Phelp's lane clearly cost Cavich the gold medal.

And congrats to the German swimmer Steffen, she just won the Gold medal over 41-year old American Dara Torres by 1/100th of a second as well!

The men's 100m final will should be an interesting race tonight. That tall Jamaican doesn't even look to be trying hard at all. He will reset his own WR tonight for sure...

And Juan, you're right... several of those Chinese girls don't look a day over 12! No way they are 16!

Ok, I'm cyber rambling... I will shut up now... Tap Toes

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-16 19:43

Smile Yep,It was Pretty cool,Dara still is pretty awesome to take a Silver at 41,(gives me hope! HAHA) Well Maybe the senior Olympics! Laugh Out Loud
GO PHELPS !

jt - 2008-08-16 19:46

Personally, I'm hoping for the Senior PGA! Laugh Out Loud

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-16 20:11

jt - 2008-08-16 20:27

I was 5 yrs old in '72 and we were living in Frankfurt, Germany. I actually have vague memories of all the hoopla over Mark Spitz back then!

8 Golds is just off the charts! I'm very happy for Phelps.

ford93 - 2008-08-16 20:28

SmileI was 6 and remember the 72 munich games very well,Spitz was amazing, gave alot of pride to all americans, that record was just thought no way,no way anyone would ever break that record. Well it's happened! It is TOTALLY amazing and phenominal what Phelps has accomplished,Mark Spitz at least was on TV last nite, and was (still is) a Totally class act,in His congrts to Michael, and He predicted victory tonite and Phelps would break his record. It is pretty amazing. Cool
