EBAY !!!

redbenjoe - 2008-12-17 21:19

made an offer on a box tonight--
got a return message --thought for sure the seller accepted my offer-

instead the email had no decision --instead it said -- "your offer will expire in 47 hours 44 minutes"

they obviously have no idea about the ages of some bidders Big Grin

anyway --seems like 24 hours is more than enough time to have a FIRM contractual offer in play --right ?? Smile

I have never set up an auction myself that used the "make an offer" option. However I have used this option many times in making a purchase. It seems like the seller has lots of options that include a price that they will automatically and immediately accept if an offer comes in at or above that number... all without the seller actually looking at and accepting your offer. I have also been locked out of an auction when I place an offer.... get it rejected.... and I place another... and get rejected. Then it tells me I have sent the maximum number of offers in for this item and I can no longer do submit any offers.... and that includes when it get relisted.... twice.... Give me a break... if you submit an offer that is over 80% of the BIN I think you at least deserve some consideration.

But it is also an option the seller has to review each offer personally and respond accordingly.... and it always seems like 48 hours is the standard. I don't know if the seller has any control over that time period or not. Probably a constant set by ebay...

To me the "make an offer" button is just a way for ebay to cut down on the behind the scenes dealing that goes on. And lets them get a cut. So that is the main reason. Heck I have made off ebay deals on open, close.... archived... items on ebay more times than I can count. So I guess I don't blame them. It also locks the seller in and shuts the auction down when he agrees. It makes me nervous when I have made an off e-bay deal for an item... paid for it.... supposedly had it shipped.... and the seller still has not gotten around to ending the auction. Buggers... I used this method just last week and saved over 50% on this realistic scr-8. This box is very clean except deck not working right. The buy it now price for $189 and I gave an offer for $82 and won it Laugh Out Loud It took almost the whole 48 hrs for decision but I think they were hoping to get someone to use buy it now !!

Oh, and did you know that the seller has the ability to COUNTER your offer not just accept/decline? Then the shoe is on the other foot and you can take your time getting back to him. I think they can only do one counter-offer at a time but I am not sure and if there is a BIN it will still trump any back-and-forths you are doing with the seller.

I did a couple of rounds of this one time with a seller. I ended up buying... (big surprise!)
