my beloved emax sampler has bit the dust as of tonight. i spent the day re and re-ing the small home studio space only to turn on this beast and find she obviously will no longer sing.
for those who do not know the emax sampler was perhaps one of the most used instruments during the period of 1986-1991 in hip hop electro and early dance.
the first nin album was pretty much all emax as well.
sadly they are extremely hard to find up here so even getting parts for it will be almost impossible. damn....................

fatdog - 2009-02-02 05:47

Oh no!! Do you have any idea what it could possibly be?

billpc55 - 2009-02-02 10:06

well i think that something shorted out inside of it.
i have a friend coming by to take a peak today but i do fear for the worst.
i just hope that i can fix it. i have so much stuff i have sampled with that beast and it is a beast.
its such a cool sampler.

I hope you can get her working again Bill. Smile

DUDE!!! i saw one of those this weekend no joke!!!!

billpc55 - 2009-02-02 18:53

where was it. do you know which one it was.
there is some hope tonite.
i wish i could just find another good one then i would not really worry much. i could use the old one for bits if i had too.

this sampler is really hard to mimick there really is only one other sampler that sounds like it.
this would be the also legendary emu sp1200.
to rich for this guy tho. remember i am cheap.

sinister - 2009-02-02 18:57

yeah the sp1200's are dope!!! a friend has the sp12 and the 1200. i saw it @ a flea market this weekend.

billpc55 - 2009-02-02 19:44

yeah thats pretty cool. you gotta be careful when you buy one. they can look like new but plug it in and its dead as dead can be.
these emax samplers use the same curtis chips as the sp1200 and 12.
they sound extemely similar.
the thing the emax lack tho is for sure the sweet pad based sequencer. they just work better for doing beats.
the emaxes sequecner tho is pretty awesome but not as fun to use.
i usually will sample stuff into the emax first then bounce to some place else.
the analog filters and envelopes in the emax really are fantastic.
i am looking for a replacement now. i cannot be without this piece of gear for too long.

Bummer to hear of this Bill.

I have a korg electribe ES-1 sampler. Unfortunately, I don't really know how to use it... I hope to get around to that soon.

I played with one of those this past weekend at Guitar Center. I was totally lost on that thing. I love the Electribes, but damn, I'll just stick with the Roland R8 and sound cards. Nod Yes

the es1 is the first of the electribe samplers and it is a modern day classic. i think anyways. its sample rate isnt pristine but not truly cool samplers was.
i tell you what tho. if you spent the money on a card from ebay with some pre sampled sounds on it. you could easily find some use for it.
i mean they are very cool.

the r8 is a classic peice of kit. it is extremely cool with the electronic card which features some very good 909 808 samples.
alot of people do not realise this is the unit being used on many many hip hop records and electro productions.
it has its own unique flavor and is also a drum machine that will most likely become more and more collectible in the coming years.

Yea, I have the EA-1 Analog synth, too....

I got them as part of a deal with about 500 records and a Korg kaoss pad effects processor that came out of a storage unit someone defaulted payment on. I sold most of the records to a store and made all of my money back. All I really need is one little power supply from Radio Shack, some midi cables and some 1/4" guitar-type cables and I can hook them both up to my mixing board and play around.

I fully intend to pick up a memory card with some sounds on it like Bill suggested and see what happens.

It will happen!

billpc55 - 2009-02-04 17:33

yeah the ea1 is pretty fun.
the emx1 just blows it aways tho. it really is a cool little beat box. one of the best ever iweo.
samplers are still cool and about to make a huge comeback.
people have really gotten a little sick of software,i mean once a new os comes out for a computer all of those cool software synths become outdated. i still think computer based recording is the way to go for the most part. i mean theres not many guys who can even operate a two inch tape multitracker anymore let alone own one.
yeah use them samplers and ea1s they are a lot of fun and really are great for doing remixes.
the ea1 can gate stuff through its inputs.
btw the emax is still dead Frown
