Cool Cool

masterblaster84 - 2008-07-15 18:29

Great finds and even better prices. Nod Yes

Judging by the recent hikes in similar items at my local Goodwill stores that sanyo would have been about $15 and the speakers would have been about $40. Prices have doubled or tripled in the last year at my local GW's.

jaredscottfla - 2008-07-15 19:46

SmileGoodwill around here usually is weak for bbx's Mb but lately several have been solid, another one i went to yesterday 10 vhs movies for a dollar, everyone wants dvd's but hey vhs is fine for 10 cents. Big Grin

I've found a few minis at Goodwill. That Sanyo is particularly nice! That's always the vintage of boxes I'm most excited to find!Judging from the two Goodwills I frequent, pricing is very irregular.I've found the same type items priced very differently even at the same store location.Pricing seems to be really discretionary for the worker who happens to mark the item.Due to the large volume they deal with and the number of employees, stuff will slip by at unusual prices in both directions (high and low, mostly low Wink ).

jaredscottfla - 2008-07-17 16:42

I Agree totally. It's that way at just about all the thrift stores around these parts if an item is not priced.
I know most of the staff at the places i frequent and they know me,believe me that helps a alot! Big Grin The sanyo is a cool box. I like it ! Certainly a bargain for 3.99! I like the 7850K i found at another store better though! Wink
The speakers really were the steal,Kenwood speakers? Had to be in the Hundreds for the pr when new and these are absolutly perfect,$6 totally unheard of. One funny thing when i bought these i was driving my ol 74 mustang the pr would NOT fit in the trunk or the back seat! Big Grin I had to lay one across the entire back seat, and put the other in the passenger seat,i was def getting some weird looks from other drivers on the way home! Laugh Out Loud

jovie - 2008-07-17 20:24

I really deal with Goodwill pretty exclusively as its so close to my house. At this point they know me almost like family I guess. The other thrifties around town are smaller and do far less volume of goods.Due to gas prices,I'm not confident I want to check them all really frequently (not that I would have that kind of time Roll Eyes )

As for speakers,I can't count the number I have let slip by for lack of space.I had to get the B&Ws and the JBL Arc50s.Also the old mid '80s Polk monitors are ones I couldn't let "slip slide away" (as Skillphil would say). There have been some huge Kenwoods,Pioneer, etc. with the oversized woofers from around 1980 I have passed on.Though lovely even just to look at,I didn't get these because I simply don't have the room at home. However I did get a pair of really beautiful Sansuis from that era with enormous white woofers capped in chrome. What a work of art that pair!

jaredscottfla - 2008-07-17 21:39

SmileOh Jovie,My Brother! Big Grin That's Hilarious,I think We Have The Same sansui's. I Have Them In My Den,Where Else,Thrift Store... They Jam and are Just Simply Phenominal sound wise. I did pay like 40.00 for those still a Bargain and The store "allowed me" to buy the small Sharp Rack System That's Hooked Up To Those! The whole system was like 70.00 But It jams,The sharp Tuner,The sharp Dual cass Deck,The sharp Turntable,The Sharp Equalizer, and Finally an rca multi disc cd player. New All That Stuff would Have been a Small Fortune. Smile

jovie - 2008-07-18 08:53

Given the sheer amount of different audio components produced in the past, that's quite a coincidence Nod Yes .That's about what I paid for mine also.Goodwill's price ceiling for electronics is $30.00.Speakers seem to be an exception (I'm guessing). This may be because you could also consider them furniture, especially the nice ones from that era.

As for the Kenwoods you bought,it seems to me that there might have been a misunderstanding between the cashier and manager about which items were being bought.Another possibility is that many that shop at Goodwill are less affluent and have small living spaces.Perhaps they just have a problem moving large "furniture" that serve no other purpose than to produce sound.Even those wanting to sell such things on Ebay have to figure in the high cost of shipping these days that their buyer will have to pay.

Many people actually do prefer the shelf systems of recent times to the bigger components of yesteryear. If they are not component fans and just want sound, smaller with a big sound will be more appealing.Interestingly we've seen this trend even in high end stereo in recent years.Everything has been engineered to have a smaller footprint (even tower speakers) or to be as invisible as possible.

Not withstanding any of this $3.00 is just absurdly low.Way to get a nice pair of speakers for the price of a couple of energy drinks Laugh Out Loud .

jaredscottfla - 2008-07-18 09:24

I Agree Big Grin
my first reasoning that some worker wanted the kenwood speakers prob was wrong, cosidering i got the pr for 6 bucks! Maybe that was the only avail space for them at the time. The mgr def knew which ones i wanted as he told the girl on speakerphone sell it to him for 3 bucks ea! Big Grin
Maybe they just wanted them gone... Whatever the reason that was the deal of the yr so far for me!
