Kaboom RV-NB10W.

ford93 - 2008-02-14 06:03

I know this is not a classic, but I had to get one before JVC discontinued them without the cassette. I got one in white and silver which is really cool I however liked the RV-B99 in black and silver sweet looking box. I read threads on these, but does anyone know if this beast could beat a Panasonic RX-DT680 or as you know an M-90?

oldskool69 - 2008-02-14 16:25

Bass output, likely. Clarity, doubt it. It was designed to just what it does, Kaboom. The Panasonic is more geared toward balanced clear audio. Big Grin

redbenjoe - 2008-02-14 16:42

ford - in my opinion -- the kaboom can beat most any box is bass output --

but compared to any of the other good classic boxes --and after the initial big bass thrill is over --
you might get tired of listening to the kaboom -- as it struggles to play anything very clear

Red you're spot on. I never even thought to compare other boxes. JVC, it seems, found the balance in it's stuff in the PC-V series from 90-93. Hyper-Bass was great matched with some good full range drivers. Before that, JVC got the most you could out of 4" drivers in special cabinets with the early PC series. After the PC-V series they went bass crazy with gigatubes and Kabooms. Big Grin

Thanks guys well at least I've got maybe the last of the mohican in cassette form from JVC.
I know for sure my 2 RX-DT680, M-70 and M-90 will stand out more but you never know this one could become a classic too.

redbenjoe - 2008-02-14 19:41

i think you are right --and the last cassette kaboom is already sort of a classic right now

billpc55 - 2008-02-15 16:38

i got the last year of the casette kaboom and the first year.
they are fantastic. allthough i cannot lie you can for sure tell the difference between the kaboom and a higher end older boombox.
i do like the way they sound.
also as a side note my disco robo completely decimates the kaboom for sheer volume.
not even close. i mean it sounds about thirty percent louder than both the kabooms.
it is the loudest boombox i have ever owned.

ford93 - 2008-02-15 19:58

What does the Disco Robo puts out in watts.

I fail to see how any boombox that has such a blatant deficiency, designed into the product by the manufacturer no less, would be considered a classic. It simply pays homage to the morons who roll around with 1.21 jigawatts of bass in their car and no mids and highs to match.

i dont know but i do believe the 109db silk screen on it.
it is super loud and considering the size of the drivers on it the bass is pretty damn good as well. with the disco button pushed in it is super loud. it is almost as loud as the one hundred watt keyboard amp i have.

Personally I tend to agree PF.However I think Kabooms by some will be considered classics some day.I'll bet there are some here who appreciate and collect eggs, even the really really bad ones.A lot of it has to do with the era people grew up in.Things from a specific era can have sentimental value to people. After all I've seen some people who have bought old A.M.C. Pacers and Gremlins (whoever made that one) to fix up.Hideous yes but certainly reflective of a by-gone era.

i like this forum but your a dumb ****

Mellow out Bill, PF is right, JVC knew who they were trying to sell too. It's all about marketing, look at what I said earlier about the 80's, early 90's, til the Kabooms and Gigatubes appeared. Panasonic was never concerned about heavy, overblown bass output until everyone else jumped on the bandwagon with stereos that looked like Transformers full of holes and tubes and super woofers. Take comfort in this, JVC sold an a**load of them so they apparently knew what they were doing. Big Grin

Ford, spot on it's only boxes! It's not like someone said "Yo momma's behind is so big, got so much bass, I tried to jam 8D batteries in her mouth cause I thought she was a Kaboom!" Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

daiwa - 2008-02-16 13:14

Snap!

redbenjoe - 2008-02-16 16:05

daiwa - can you 'splode ANY box ?

like even the big strong telefunken studio !!

ford93 - 2008-02-16 16:10

C'mon Daiwa that box cost me some money! Big Grin

nikamichi - 2008-02-16 19:03

Kabooms are the Big Bass Dogs.

Stock, there aint a lot of mid, but particularly high end.

I have the minidisc version ( which isn't technically a Kaboom as it is AC only) and the cassette version which has the drum Machine and scratch pad.

The MD version is more balanced, and is nicer sounding than any of my old boxes.

The one with the drum machine, is pretty vile sounding, however, I have a cunning plan to have the mid unit re-coned in kevlar, and put a set of tweeters in.

Will require some tweaking to balance, but think it will be worthwhile !

Well there Mr. I, seems that nothing I did could make a dent in the Telefunken...

(Ford, maybe if we blow all the other Kabloomers up yours will be worth more! Big Grin

redbenjoe - 2008-02-17 03:08

yet, we are thankful for that lofty effort !

ford93 - 2008-02-17 03:58

I'm curious about your mod. pic plz. when you have this done, I bet that will improve the sound.

redbenjoe - 2008-02-17 07:19

what mod ?
are you asking about the nikamichi kaboom mods --

in case he can accomplish all that -- then the kaboom would have no faults

ford93 - 2008-02-17 07:21

Yeah I'm refering to Nikamichi's thread Red. Smile

redbenjoe - 2008-02-17 07:27

i really hope he does it - and sends us the instructions --
because the kaboom is the only box we could mod -- with complete certainty that we could always get another one -if we needed an 'original' --
and/or jvc probably still sells the stock parts i/we might destroy in the process

so-- GO NIkamichi !!

ford93 - 2008-02-23 11:39

I received my Kaboom RV-NB10W a few days ago and let me just say wow! Yes it does lack on the treble side but not too much it depends what type of music you're listening. The other is it only plays type I and II tapes but overall it delivers I'm happy with it. Smile

redbenjoe - 2008-02-23 12:56

welcome to the kaboom club ford -
that base puts a smile on your face !!

redbenjoe - 2008-02-24 06:52

hey ford --while not insulting every other box and every kaboomless member -
asking if you think that it makes the base output on all other boomers --sound like they are trying too hard --
know what i mean ?

I wholly agree.
Also (as I may have mentioned before Wink), you can turn the bass right down.
It's interesting to have a b-box with this sound. The majority of the other b-boxes I've heard struggle to push out the low bass to match what they can do with the mids & highs.

Finally my old chestnut about b-boxes surfaces again here:
IMHO, b-boxes weren't about accurate sound reproduction, they were about being impressive. The Kaboom does this in spades...
