Worst gig ever ;)

northerner - 2013-07-02 07:38

So as its gone really quiet on the forum today and I'm bored at work I thought I'd pose a question...whats the worst or most embarassing gig you've ever been too?

I saw some godawful bands back in the 80's, some of the worst include Doctor and the Medics (remember the Spirit in the Sky cover and the ridiculous hair...the only good thing that came out of that gig was that I asked a cracking girl out who is now my wife!), Brother Beyond (absolutely crap boy band), and Alien Sex Fiend (catchy band name, gig full of very freaky people).

Anybody care to share? ...not interested in good bands or cool ones, just crap and embarassing ones

deech - 2013-07-02 07:44

That was not the worst gig for you Northerner !!!

Must have been one of the best

if you met your wife there

so the title of the thread is misleading !

northerner - 2013-07-02 08:13

Ok so that one was a good night out but it was a really crap gig...laughable one hit wonders of the worst order!

OK so I'll add another more recent embarassing one...I went to Download (big rock music festival) 3 or 4 years back and have to admit that I was at the front for ZZ Top...cheesy but I bloody loved it!!!!   Not much of a rock fan but had a ball that weekend, got to hang out in the backstage bar and stand reasonably close to the fellas from ZZ Top whilst supping my pint trying not to stare

northerner - 2013-07-02 12:15

Just me that's been to crap gigs then lol

Missed this one Si

Mine was a first date with a girl who absolutely LOVED Jethro Tull. I was impartial  but hell a date is a date. Well it started well with Saga opening for them but when Tull got on stage they were stoned out of their minds. They made some "music" and the words almost made lyrics but the show became a comedy act. The crowd booed and finally they threw in the towell and LEFT! The crowd went berserk and a near riot ensued.

My girlfreind was PI$$ed at ME for getting tickets (like I knew they'd be wrecked for the show) I couldn't win

I've never forgiven them for ruining what would have been a sure thing  that evening. That was the last time we went out.....I hate you Jethro Tull

deech - 2013-07-05 06:34

Brutus I hope they played this song before they left the stage !!

claret.badger - 2013-07-05 06:55

ZZ Top are NOT cheesy

hth

northerner - 2013-07-05 08:01

Jethro Tull?....what a nightmare lol...tho I reckon them being drunk/stoned can't make the music any worse than it was to start with.

And ZZ Top are a bit cheesy...I'm a life long fan so I'm allowed to say so. I saw them with my son who was 13 at the time and he thought they were well cheesy but then that was compared with Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Limp Bizkit, Prodigy etc etc who we'd seen earlier in the weekend

I saw the UK Subs in the Tumble Down Dick in Farnborugh in about 1992.

A rumour circulated that the gig had been cancelled and there was some confusion about wether or not it had been. Most people seemed to think it was off, so only about 25 people tuned up.

The band only did about four songs then called it a night. Charlie Harper (lead singer) actually sung one number from the bar while supping a pint.

That sounds great! I love small gigs.

Went to see Paul Weller in London and the bleeder didn't turn up...he had a hissy fit coz someone had thrown a firework at him the night before. In fact I've been scheduled to see him 3 times and never quite managed it!

Went to see The Stray Cats (more cheese!) a couple of years back and they didn't turn up either as one of them had fallen off the stage the night before.

mitchelljames - 2013-07-05 08:28

The Stray Cats are great, i would go and see them

northerner - 2013-07-05 09:15

Yeh the Stray Cats tickets were a birthday present from my sister...was gutted as we were just about to set off for the gig in Manchester when she got a text from the ticket company saying it'd been cancelled...got my checked shirt on and my quiff ready and no where to go

Would love to see Gary Numan. Seeing the Human League in a fortnight but that's gonna be a good gig not a crap one

northerner - 2013-07-05 09:17

I agree Si. I hated their tunes with a passion, but alas a a horny teenager I would have walked across broken glass, sprinkling salt in front of me if it meant I had a "chance" *wink, wink*

Jethro Tull presented me an opportunity too good to be true...but like the Hindenburg

Worst gig i ever saw, believe it, or not, was stevie nicks, at birmingham NEC in 88. The reason being, she used the NEC`s sound system, which, unfortunately couldn`t handle the load put on them, and, they were crackling really loudly. The weird thing was, the support, was richard marx, who, had his own sound set up, and, sounded superb. I felt sorry for stevie, and, at the same time, i was a little disappointed in her. Best gig, has to be, pink floyd, performing "the wall", at earls court in 81. A close 2nd, is kiss, at manchester MEN, when the original line up got back together, with the make up on. "Get the firehouse" .

northerner - 2013-07-05 12:47

Pink Floyd in '81...very cool

Most spectacular was Slipknot...lots of pyrotechnics and spinning drum kits.

Most fun, bizarrely, was going to see Garbage...just because I saw them in Phoenix, Arizona. Got to drive there in a mustang convertible, and afterwards go back stage and chat with the band...Shirley Manson was a bit nuts but it was way cool meeting Butch Vig (he produced Nirvana's album Nevermind). Still got a photo of me and Shirl somewhere
