Sony D-5A (D-50) Carboot Bargain !!!

mrp32dave - 2009-08-28 06:49

Walking round a carboot and saw some modern boomboxes on a stall and next to them in pile was a Sony D-5A or D-50 in the UK with the battery case, the clip on power supply with the phono outs and leads and nice pair of SRS-30 active speakers.I asked the seller "How much for that?" and he replied "What all of it?", I said "Yes all of it" to which he replied £3, I couldn't grab it fast enough. Smile
Here's the pictures:

It's all in very very good condition no marks or scratches anywhere and works well, it's from Canada so the adaptor is 110v, it did come with a very dodgy looking voltage dropper, so I binned this and used my own. Also in the battery case were 6 vintage ni-cad betterys which still seem to hold a good charge.
What a bargain!!!

Yes amazing, I collect discman and already have a boxed D-50 and a D-14 the same but a later release, but I paid more than I would like say for the boxed D-50, so amazing!!!

does it still work 100%? Smile

The D-5A works fine as does the battery case, but the clip on power supply with the phono outs appears dead, open ciruit on the transformers secondary, but I have another of these with my D-14 this is also 110v, so I will convert the dead one to 240v by replacing the transformer, I wanted to do this to my other one but as it was working didn't want to mess with it to keep it original. As with all vintage Discman there is no shock protection or anti skip just resume so it will carry on playing from where was it before, so although they are all portable you can only walk with them and not subject them to any shocks or sudden movement.

Oh glorious stuff.

Tim Jarman had one of these with an 'executive' glass topped case which housed it & it's power supply if you chose to use it as a compliment to your home system rather than in 'portable' mode.

OH what a feeling that must have been walking with that TREASURE in hand going home. That is one totally right bit o kit as I think its said. To find all of that together and in such condition for the unthinkable price you paid. Well I am green with envy. Good for you. Thanks for sharing the grand find and great pictures.
