TEAC PC-7RX with dbx Ultra ELUSIVE model

johnedward - 2010-08-05 21:08

I have been after this for 2 years now. I believe this is FIRST photo of the TEAC PC-7RX made in 1983 on this forum. Am beyond lucky to have a MINT Panasonic RQ-J20X (1982) the ONLY OTHER WALKMAN to have dbx noise reduction. dbx is simply amazing for tape as it TOTALLY eliminates tape hiss without affecting the highs like dolby b or c. Drawback is you must have a fairly rare dbx encoder/decoder to encode the signal going onto your recorded tape. A dbx tape can NOT be played without dbx decodeing such as dolby b can. It also sounds MUCH worse played on non dbx walkman then a dolby C does on dolby b or no dolby walkman. It needs a belt which on this model is easy to do. I will need to do this soon in future so I can report back on sound quality. SPECIAL NOTE is that this player made even more rare by the addition of optional FM TUNER MODULE built in a cassette. Sadly I am missing this valuable part of player. BUT the FM Tuner module cassette from Both the KLH and the AKAI work perfectly in the TEAC !
Tremendous thank you must go to elite1502323 for letting me know this was on ebay. He remembered I collect dbx equipment and rare dbx vinyl records.

We all love a detective store and you all are going to LOVE THIS discovery !! Having #331 walkman has an advantage of direct comparison. The Teac PC-7RX is IDENTICAL to several other mfg. models. THE REAL QUESTION IS : of the following WHO makes the parts originally for all other mfg? Although the TEAC has a MUCH more sophisticated PCB board to accommodate the dbx circuitry that TEAC must have made themselves.

AKAI PM-R1 with FM Tuner module
AKAI PM-R2 w/ DOLBY B and FM Tuner module
KENWOOD CP-20 ( see my Kenwood topic) not available with tuner module
KLH SOLO S-200 w/ FM Tuner module

For those of you interested in knowing more about the dbx technology please see my following topic

How very interesting, I for one had no idea this unit was available. Here in the UK we had this unit (as per the three rather than the dbx) released under the bargain Boots brand, so it does seem odd that Teac chose this format for one of their only walkamns. My guess is that the Teac cassette technology department wanted a donor unit to showcase some 'new' format, maybe for marketing purposes, who knows but this looks like a chicken and egg scenario to me.

Also, PM me your address & I'll send you a red case for your PM-R2, unless you already have one then I'll keep it Smile

Very nice player John. I was also bidding on the ebay listing since I figured it would go great with my Panasonic RQ-J20X but I decided to let it go so I could buy one of the other walkmans I had my eye on. I'm glad it went to you though because it looks great next to your Akai's along with your RQ-J20X. Great pictures.

On a special note: Whatever happens to the FM modules on these walkmans? LOL. My JVC CQ-F2E is also missing it's radio module. I guess I'm lucky my Infinity Intimate isn't missing it's module because there's no way I'd find another module for that one if I could even find another Infinity Intimate at all. They don't show up on ebay much.

Hi John, hows it going.
I saw this Teac but had no funds, sorry forgot you were into DBX or would have messaged you, glad to see it went to a good home, looks very nice.
I have 3 players with the same mechs an AKAI PM-R2, JVC CQ-22 and a Ferguson 3T20.
The Ferguson is actually the best sounding of the 3 and unusual in having Dolby, Metal and Normal and Hi and Low Tone switches.

Good to hear from you DAVE and thank you for taking pictures and adding to the mystery. AH HAH even more is afoot here now two more players emerge with seemingly identical mechanics and on several identical bodies.

Who would car to make a guess as to What manufacture made the mechanics for these?? Seems some mfg. even bigger named ones for a year or two would use someone else mechanics then make own then for a year or two a few models appear that look like a totally different mfg. mechanics then prior company used. I would make a stab that AKAI is the maker here ? Stay tuned hope to take the new belt I put on Kenwood and put on TEAC. Will take pictures of internals.

AO I agree it does seem very unusual that TEAC/TASCAM high and very high end equipment would make move into walkman market with a mediocre quality at best model to spend time money research to make the PCB board etc to work in dbx. Though I can say my Kenwood like this TEAC has better than avg. sound for this time frame. I actually have another TEAC model typical mid to late 80's all plastic no dolby with price being overriding reason for building and limiting quality. REALLY TEAC... what were you thinking to put your name on such low quality item as this PP-38. In its defense it still plays perfectly with better than I would expect of this quality good higher response.
DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANY TEAC models other than these two ????

DAVID, one of my strong focus of my collection is the walkman that came with the RADIO tuner module/cassette. I am lucky to have 37 models and all but 2 have the original tuner module. You are correct so often I pass up these as the tuner module is missing. As to why the module is so often missing I will use my own intuition. Personally I would say in past 2 years of collecting and listening again daily to walkman I listen to FM radio less than 5% of the time. Being that the FM cassette is easily mixed in with a persons cassette collection which over years is tossed out but the walkman usually survives in a drawer or closet not tossed out. Or you take a recorded tape with you and have the FM tuner module in the walkman. Then you put in the tape and put down the tuner module which eventually finds easy way to being LOST and most people probably once lost figure they used it so little why get another.
Some of these tuner modules and the walkman are so unique and rare. I will have to find time to photo them and post. Big job with so many. My two rarest probably first is the SONY WM-40 which ONLY in Japan came with the CTP-1A tuner FM module cassette. In the WM-40 and WM-10RV world release you can see a plastic insert cover inside where pick up is on mine. Recently had new motor put in , belt some caps and it is a true tribute to this rare highly sought after way over engineered model.

SONY WM-40 w Tuner module topic

Second be the Toshiba Red AM RP-A2 NIB cassette module for the KT-R1, R2 and S2 also fit S1 and S3 models that came with the RP-S2 FM blue tuner module. The am tuner module ONLY available as a optional purchased separately item thus no wonder its rarity. WHO WOULD BUY and want to listen to AM on the walkman unless you were into sports.

MY TOSHIBA collection /tuner modules

Guess I should be careful dont want this TEAC/cloans topic to turn into tuner modules. Look for my topic in next week or so on this.

Hi JohnEdward looking at the first picture, it immediately brought back memories not of the Teac but of Akai. I just thought it looks just like the Akai I had back in the 80’s.

Then I did see you mentioned and showed the Akai later on. I had the red one like in the picture. If I remember correctly the Akai did not have dbx ?

I remember having a summer job and saving up 2 weeks pay to buy one, I’m sure I paid £70 for it.

Thanks for the shout-out, John. -Glad to help you.

coolcol - 2010-08-09 08:03

Yes i have the Akai PM-R2 nice sound too.

How about the tuner pack of RP FA100 as that has to be the rarest which i am looking so hard for.

Will it happen is another question.

Do any of you have this one??

david - 2010-08-14 00:30

Hi John, I was looking through my units, deciding which ones to part with and I came across this one and realized it might be a clone of the Teac. It looks like the mechanisms are the same. I will be listing this one on ebay. I just wanted to contribute to your Teac clone discussion before saying goodbye to this unit.
