The development of a late AIWA serie - from PX257 to EX/LX2000

eingang - 2010-08-27 05:41

Dear Folks. The very first time for me to share a part of my collection with you. It´s about units most of you - if not all - will not collect at all. We are talking about units of the mid + latest 90s.

1995 it all began with the HS-PX257 and the CX130 "Campus Edition" .....

PS: The black Hold-Button on the pink CX130 is not original..... ^^

tuna - 2010-08-27 05:51

Oh I love the late 1990s players! Just not all of them. More pics please! I had an Aiwa HS-PX477 that had a multi-sound processor, a feature introduced in the PX1000 I think but for considerable less money.

eingang - 2010-08-27 05:54

Proceeding we get the improved version of this type HS-PX357:

Though the numbers do not rise, the next step is 347 in black, light blue, pink and the G-Metal Edition in metallic anthrazit:

In 1997 things get even more interesting with release of the first EX/LX model types. For the first time we see the shining finish in green, blue, red and black. Blue and black haven been called EX and the red/green one had been the LX which was the "Ladies´ Collection". They all have had the sticker which is still left on the blue one. 200DM had been solid middle class at that time. It´s a pity many of them get broken much too early...

eingang - 2010-08-27 06:05

We should not forget the 5th color which was anthrazit but with a different model description - HS-PX547.

eingang - 2010-08-27 06:14

A great step in evolution was seen in 1998 with the succesor EX200-MKII - A different case, much more flat with a clean finish and much more reliable technics. Most units working today yet very fine. Again we see same colors, again green and red as ladies´ collection. Especially the green one is very very rare.

eingang - 2010-08-27 06:17

Last but not least the very final step from 200MKII to 2000...... we should not forget the missing metal color in a row with the 200-MKII types which again was given a different name PX557....

eingang - 2010-08-27 06:40

Some words to finish....

As far as I know the EX/LX2000 had been the last models manaufactured by AIWA before Sony catched them. Of course there are newer models but their technics are different.

There is one type "PX750" which could be called a successor, but I have never seen this here in Europe and could not investigate it. Also there are Japanese versions with other descriptions f.e. 347 --> 530 and several others which I don´t know. As far as I know most if not all of this series released in Europe should be shown in this topic but who knows if there are other ones ????

So if you have some missing unit at home or maybe one in a very good condition which is not so good here in picture, please PM me, I am interested.

I will add some boxes here too, soon. Also I would be happy if some of you could add some informations and comments. Is there any other collector here who collects this serie too ??

eingang - 2010-08-27 07:08

Here are all different types of boxes I have which belong to units of this serie. I am not sure if there might be other EX/LX200MKII boxes with switched colors ??? Again, if anyone of you has missing boxes, please let me know.... thanks !!!

I love these Aiwa's, I have a few myself. For me, I don't see what's not to like about them. Most have a metal body compact design with a grea drive. I especially love the one's with super fast forward and rewind. And I find that they sound pretty darn good. Great collection by the way!

zx280 - 2010-08-27 18:22

Superb and definitive collection. Very impressive.

renzgi - 2010-09-03 12:15

Fantastic!
I like this kind of collecting.
Thank you for sharing.

Tuna, Milosancho, zx280 + Renato ....

Thanks a lot for your compliments....

Hopefully some new colors or even types and boxes will complete this serie someday.... I will make an update if anything new arrives. But it´s extremely difficult to find.

The Aiwa HS-PX397 was one of the best sounding walkmans I've ever owned (DD9 aside). To get better sound I've had to go to the dark side (Sony X series)...

I know this thread is several years old, but many thanks for posting - it was a very interesting read.
I recall I had an Aiwa PX557, the silver model. I remember being seduced by its sleek size and the rechargable battery, having a Sony EX-512 at the time, with the buldging battery compartment.
SInce its been a good few years I can't say much about sound quality, but overall I remember I wasn't too happy with this walkman, to the extent that I went back to Sony for all my successive walkmans. Build quality wasn't great - I remeber that when using it on the go, the rechargeable battery would sometimes loose contact with the battery terminals, causing the walkman to abruptly stop playing. The sliding switches for dolby etc. were also pretty flimsy and easy to disattach from the machine. The remote also had a low-rent feel comapred to Sony when pressing buttons etc. Also what I recall is that the battery meter, whcih was one of the advertised features on the walkman was pretty useless - it would stay on full chargé and then within a few minutes go to medium / empty and stop playing. I guess that was the characteristic of a NiCad battery. I remember that I was pretty happy when I managed to sell it and could get another Sony.

Yeah, OLD thread but I read through it, found it quite informative and enlightening so I tagged it. I recently got a PX347 and love it to death. It sounds absolutely great, and is quite compact. I'm on the lookout for others in the series.

mtothaj - 2015-09-17 06:05

Marketing-wise from what I recall Aiwa was attempting to be percieved as more edgy / cool underdog vs Sony, in much the same was as Sega positioned itself in the videogame market. I might give Aiwa another try if I find a walkman in decent shape although as compared to Sony they are apparently more problematic with time - capacitors requiring replacement etc.
