isolator42 - 2007-12-03 07:33

Oh Nicolle, that's gorgeous!

My very fist walkman was a Sanyo M4440.
Bought from a friend, I just got the unit, headphones & the case, so you now have more than I ever did.
Lovely.

Didn't you already have one of these Sanyos?

walkgirl - 2007-12-03 08:56

That is great Happy! Cool

Thanks Smile

walkgirl - 2007-12-03 08:58

Thank you Smile, Yes I remember a topic where
you did tell about your first walkman! and
also you did tell about you did get this one
after all those years Smile

I have one all ready, it was my first ebay walkman
Cool, I use that one for playing tapes, this
one I keep in the box Smile

ao - 2007-12-03 10:01

Hi Nicolle, yeah sorry this is late.

Isn't it remarkable that this stuff manages to survive in this condition for as so long, it makes you think who bought it & why, as they certainly didn't use it.

I always struggled to see where the 4440 fitted in the grand scheme of things. Yes it was Sanyo's answer to Sony's budget WM-1/WM-4 units.(too late to compete with TPS-L2 I'm affraid) but it wasn't cheap, this was around £60 in the UK compared to Sony's £45/50 price tag. Why have a Sanyo with ugly headphones when you can have a Sony with the glorious MDR-4's for £15 less.

The reason it was so pricey was that it was just too over-engineered for a budget unit, nice quality plastics plus lots of features.

That said, there's a lot of these turning up on eBay, it's probably the most frequent vintage unit (pre 85) to appear in the UK. But certainly NOT in any condition even close to this.

Indded a nice catch.

walkgirl - 2007-12-03 10:41

Smile

That is what I wonder about also!, I would love
to know where the sellers find this stuff, and
how these boxes did stay in this condition
for 25 years or so!, there is not even one bit of dust
on the box to find!, there must be some old
stores out there who still have some of the nicest
walkmans lying around in the warehouse, but why do
I never find these stores? Confused

I love this sanyo walkman very much, and I
believe it is a good competitor(??) to the
tpls2 walkman, and I think (I never did see a
tpls2 box in real life, only on pictures) that
how this sanyo walkman is packed it does seem
more luxurious as the sony!, this box is almost
as big as a shoebox!.

I like these sanyo E330 headphones as much as
the sony tpls2 ones, and maybe they are even
more rare! (I think Leaving )

Smile

That's awesome walkgirl.
It's the dream of any collector to find what you have. The box looks like it doesn't even have 25 minutes of wear let alone 25 years.

I agree, I wonder how things like this pop up. Was it a box in a warehouse that fell into a dark space unnoticed for 25 years?

kid.sensation - 2007-12-07 10:43

first of all:

Very nice find Nicolle!Glad you found a Sanyo in this nice condition!!Looks great Cool

to the nib-thing.

Those Sanyos seem pretty common with original packaging i think.
Saw a lot of nib sanyos on ebay until now..Got 2 nib ones myself!(one is a MG-30 , same condition to unit and box like nicolles )
Never saw more nib walkmans/walkmen(?) than those sanyos!Even if the most common ones are more like the low-end ones like my MG-30 ( and maybe that's why they stayed in the warehouses )

still great to find a unit like nicolles in this condition..I guess the better the quality and functions the harder to find it nib.

Thank you Felix Smile

Yes, I do see alot of new in the box sanyo
walkmans on ebay de, but usually the more
'cheap' ones, the more expensive ones not so
much, as it would be more logical the more
expensive ones would be more common as they
are kore expensive and people tend to buy the
more cheap ones first Confused

fuzzyduck - 2007-12-11 10:36

Great score there Walkgirl, just in time for Christmas! Cool

walkgirl - 2007-12-11 11:24

i worked in a warehouse in the late 1970's. we did also get returned defectives that came back. sometimes when a partial lot of a certain product was defective the whole lot was recalled to the main warehouse. not all were bad but a large percentage were. the seller sometimes wanted there products sent back after the claim was settled. others said just go ahead and destroy them. that meant the crusher. they all didn't get crushed. we could buy any amount of these "destroyed" products for very little money. many took advantage of these great deals and some ended up with bad products and some got lucky and got a perfectly fine merchandise. i believe that still happens and occasionally these small lots come up for sale now. it's a gamble but for a good price why not take a chance ? also i know they surface in quantities at freight salvadge stores and many are purchased at a low price buy flea market dealers who sometimes are not able to sell all they bought and then are put aside for future sale.
