My walkman collection -- over 300 boxes now

demiwang - 2012-11-02 12:56

Hi, I am keen Walkman collector from China in Beijing. Out of my sentimental attachment to Walkman, I have collected a bunch of Walkman, over 300 new set of Walkman in original box. Here are some pictures I took recently and would share with all Walkman addicts here. Only a small a portion of my collection.

Just forget to upload photos of my DD9. I have updated its photos.

I am very delighted if I could make friends here and exchange our tales of Walkman. Please feel free to contact me at 154348729@qq.com.

Here, thanks to John Edward, though I never got a chance to chat with you. I am the buyer of your DD100. I found you when I was looking for boxed DD100.

OH MY GOD IN HEAVEN.... WOW 發出叫聲 !!!  I am speechless to see so many boxed perfect examples of such rare Walkman even many of same model.   You are most welcome to our forum and we look forward to your future topics and excellent photos plus we hope you will join in posting to other members topics to share your great knowledge of these precious machines.

I thought when I glanced down your photos saw the DD100 that was mine I had recently sold.  Very happy to know it sits among such other prestigious company of fine boxed Walkman.

Your WM-EX1 that has the Original WALKING FEET Sony Logo and says " The 15th Anniversary Walkman " on the player I have NEVER SEEN SUCH A WALKMAN.  My WM-EX1HG does not have that on it.   What a extra rare example of this player.

ken80s - 2012-11-02 20:22

That is a long story to tell. Walkman has accompanied me from my junior high school. I picked up very poor Walkman in my father’s tool box. It was ugly yet still worked in good order. The sound was miraculous. From that moment, it had to stay with me any time, on the street, at school, or when doing my homework. Sometime, the music buoyed me up, sometime, consoled, reassured me. Curiously, that music granted me a serenity of mind nowhere to be found. Two year later, when I was fifteen, my mother bought me a Sony slim full metal body Walkman as a prize for my enrollment into the best High school in my city. It was chic. From then, I love Walkman every more.

For the common interest in Walkman, I gathered a group of friends. And we frequented SONY, AIWA stores, discovering that Walkman was so colorful. Its industry design made me believe it comes from the future, a science-fiction staff. We friends often gathered, exchanging and toying with our Walkman, earphones, cassettes or CDs . That brought me a great joy.

Since I love Walkman so much, after I got a job and become financially independent, I began to collect Walkman, and this endeavor really makes me think a lot. There is too much to share concerning what I feel, reflect and learnt in my collecting time. Maybe I will write it down in a few days.

The more Walkman I have, the more I thought: I have to find a way to share my private collection with those who love Walkman so much. So I have ambitious plan of publishing a deluxe photo collection of Walkman in the hope of writing down such a special product and its time into history. That motivated me I keep collecting more and more. I plan to collect my friends’ stories with Walkman and freeze those stories into pictures. To fulfill this plan, I also plan to find professional photographers who are fully responsible for designing settings, choosing human models, etc, according to Walkman lover’s story. This photo collection should be totally rich in expressions of lives with Walkman. While some pictures are intended to demonstrate the most beauty of Walkman itself, some more pictures, including not only a Walkman or two as its main subjects but people in it, is planned to telling a story in specific background of culture and will be published in three languages, say English, Japanese and Chinese, to be international.

I shouldn’t reveal my plan so early. But since I have made a resolution, I won’t let anybody who is expecting this photo collection down, though it might take years. Anyway, I will share a part of proud photos with friends here.

As to how I got this precious treasure trove, I have been keeping an eye on Ebay, Yahoo. And mobilize my friends everywhere, UK, US, Germany, Austria, etc, to help me. Also, there are a lot collectors aside from me in China, and I have very good relationships with them. Of course, a lot of Walkman are acquired from theirs.

ken80s - 2012-11-02 21:45

Thanks Demiwang for sharing your walkman biography. It is indeed interesting.

ao - 2012-11-03 00:37

Some very nice stuff here despite the odd title to your post, is '50 grand' based on 'as new' prices or assumed value (based on?).

I particularly like the 'Walking Stereo' graphics to the TPS-L2 box & I have't seen that many nice Discmans in one place before.

Which one did you get first, why only Sony, what's your favourite but most of all, which one do you most want next?

demiwang - 2012-11-03 01:47

@ agentorange   50 grands is the the price I bought them for plus shipping expense and necessary additional cost, not the original on sale price specified by SONY decades ago.

What i want most next are 701T, wood boxed EX1 GOLD version, QUALIA 017.

All of these are only hundreds pieces in total, not for sale or only tailored. I just wait, not expect them too much.

85% of my Walkman collection is of SONY brand and the other covers classic AIWA, Panasonic, HITACHI, SHARP. I have brand new boxed PX1000, JX2000, J707, J70, JX729……; unused boxed SHARP TV10, the hybrid of cassette player equipped with a TV, you know that; mint boxed HITACHI CP-88R is a Walkman small than a cassette box, similar to Toshiba AS10…… I will make time to take photos and share them with you.

toocool4 - 2012-11-03 01:56

Here is the HITACHI CP-88R by walkgirl from this very site

toocool4 - 2012-11-03 02:02

Hi Demiwang do you still use any of your Walkman daily? I use my DC2 every day on my commute to and from work.

demiwang - 2012-11-03 02:11

I only have a D6C besides my pillow.

the other walkman are just rest on the shelf.

i have a deck KA7ES used for recording tapes.

Super Metal Master performs terrific. I forget to take off my earphone everytime after listening it.

toocool4 - 2012-11-03 02:21

When I want the best sound on the move I often take my D6C out with me.

I use Nakamichi CR-7 to do my recordings onto TDK MA-XG, I still have plenty of unopened MA-XG’s. I have not been able to get any Sony Super Metal Masters to try out yet.

driptip - 2012-11-03 07:41

Holy.....I missed that. Good eyes Driptip.

What's the deal with that? Dod Sony and Aiwa pair up on MD development?

toocool4 - 2012-11-03 09:00

aiwa was a sister company of Sony at one time. They did make the same things at some point, but I think they stopped that because they released the same thing badged under their own names but the aiwa one was cheaper.

brutus442 - 2012-11-03 09:13

Thanks toocool4

That had me baffled after Driptip pointed it out.

driptip - 2012-11-03 09:32

to me thats crazy but hey what ever works lol, i like aiwa better too.

litfan - 2012-11-03 12:59

That, is the most amazing collection i have ever seen.

walkman.archive - 2012-11-03 14:12

Welcome to this forum! Excellent collection Demiwang!

I like the most the original TPS-L2 and the gold EX1. Impressive collection of DD units as well as fine Discmans too. I like photos 701S 1, 2 & 3... good photographic skills!

It's curious that you showed no DD9 and looks that you miss only one color to complete your original DD line, right? Maybe the gold one?

It's curious also that you showed no other brand out from SONY, except that licensed minidisc from AIWA.

Keep uploading photos :-)

John, that's a special golden version of the EX1. You can see it in my "Golden walkmans: luxus in a portable player" in my website. It's an extremely rare unit.

vincent - 2012-11-03 14:15

Welcome to the forum Demiwang.

This is an amazing collection you have there! also very professional and stylish pictures.

I hope you'll enjoy it here and we will enjoy your pictures for years to come  Please keep it coming....

BTW I always wanted to know, what is it meaning of these 2 words I encounter when I'm surfing taobao for walkmans: Epworth - 爱华 and

Shulu fang 收录放机. I am sure everyone will appreciate your answer.

Thanks for sharing

I am surprised by the globlization of TAOBAO. Ma Yun, chairman of TAOBAO, must be very happy to see this.

AIWA translates as “爱华” in Chinese. As for Shulu fang "收录放机", shu"收" means radio; lu"录" means recording, fang"放" means play.

Therefore, Shulu fang“收录放机” refers to walkman, a radio, recorder, and cassette player rolled into one, like sony GX674, AIWA JX2000. Like well-known D6C, it can both record and play, but without radio, so we call it Lufang"录放机". Likewise, DD9 can only play, without recording or radio, so we call it Danfang"单放机", "单" means only.

thelion - 2012-11-04 04:53

Mystery solved.  Thanks.

Now... let's see your AIWA's
