Early SANYO's Walkman w/FM TUNER cassette

johnedward - 2013-02-23 18:36

In the early 80's many companies to keep the Walkman smaller in size ( at that time already they were bricks or the next generation of down size such as the Sony WM-2 still large) they put the radio electronics into a cassette.  This was inserted with contacts to pick up power and transmit signal to Walkman and antenna external of using the Headphone wire (less effective).  It was innovative and a novel idea for the time.

I believe Sanyo only made two models with the tuner cassette.   If any member has a Sanyo other than the two here please add photos and descriptions.   Both of my boxed models were sold I believe in late 1982 and 1983.

The more budget priced model is the MG-34DT.  It had all the same features of the MG-110DT but was all plastic construction on the exterior and the internal parts used a lot more plastic as the 34DT was much lighter in weight than the 110DT.   The sound quality was also better in the 110DT IMO.

SANYO MG-110DT  --***THIS NIB player is listed in for sale section.***

I really like the feel and function of this player.  It has a strong amplifier in it and the auto reverse function is superb very solid and instant change of direction.   The player has a  wonderful solid very well built feel to it.   Always loved the players that have doors that are mostly clear to show off the tape inside player and it has a nicely styled metal floor under the tape that makes a great display in a case with no tape in player also.

Features : Auto Reverse which works perfectly and instantly.  See video.

It has Twin rotary volume thus balance left right , Dolby B with indicator light on front, Radio/Tape function switch,Metal/CrO2/Norm switch, Red tape direction indicator arrows lighted, DC 3 volt input ( A/C mains adapter was NOT included with orig. box had to be purchased separately), Uses two AA batteries.  AM/FM Tuner module has FM Tuning AND Stereo red indicators and the radio tunes in tons of stations and very easy to tune to strong signal and it does not drift.   Very good sounding radio one of very best of my 26 Walkman with FM tuner modules.

Jack Berg used to have NOS versions of the M-G634DT a few years back, I was always tempted but did think his prices a bit high.

Hi John, nice boxed sanyo's, I have these but not boxed sadly , my favourite is my M-G38DT which is almost the same as the M-G110DT except it has a speaker in the cassette door and the tuner pack design is different to account for the smaller window.

dbxs - 2013-02-25 09:32

I have similar sanyos!  The MG-34DT  with same exact tuner pack.  I also have the Sanyo MG-100. The same player but no tuner, same color.

John your MG34dt is a stunner!....if you ever want to part with it, I'll be first in line! DIBS

well that MG-110DT in your box has "autoreverse" letters in embossed, reflective style, while mine has simple black letters like printed on the box. any idea why ? was it different models in USA and EU ?

gearwheel - 2014-03-06 12:45

this is mine :

brutus442 - 2014-03-06 15:17

Very nice gearwheel,

These Sanyo's are among my fav's. I recently found not one but two of my beloved 34's. They don't have auto reverse like yours but the mechanism inside these beasts are robust to say the least!

pjsando - 2015-03-14 04:11

JohnEdward,

Do you still have the MG-110DT (no radio) for sale?

I had one of these as a teenager, but was stolen at school. Long time ago now just about got over it

Anyway, I've been looking one for ages. I remember the quaility was great, auto reverse really top notch and it had the double volume control (not seen this on any other personal stereo).

Cheers

Patrick

Sadly John passed away a while ago Patrick. You may want to try a new post with your request or scour Ebay.

Hi JohnEdward,

I saw Your Sanyo pics and reading what You said, I'm sending this (I know is not a prompt answer, but late is better than nothing :-), to the models of Your nice Sanyo description, there is a 3rd one model which can be considered really part of the family, I attach a pics I found over internet, its name is:  M-G38DT.

My compliments for what You do. Cheers, Maurizio

Francesco, read this thread attentively!

francesco.maurizio.militello - 2015-06-25 16:37

hi thunder, I was reading with attention BEFORE to write and publish the pic, and mrp32Dave already told about the M-G38DT, but without showing any pics, as I have done.

So I just followed the suggestion.
