Wow! Interesting looking box but bonkers price

ao - 2013-01-14 13:16

Nah, that's a nice Sony, bonkers rare and in good shape

lav.loo - 2013-01-14 13:45

looks like an old electric cooker lol, prob's sounds crap like most 1 piece sony's do aswell on the other hand it's nice to see a different box doing unbelievably well on epay, quiet extraordinary to say the least

brutus442 - 2013-01-14 19:04

I was watching this but figured it wouldn't garnish much attention...boy was I wrong

deech - 2013-01-15 11:14

I was watching this also !

It is kind of rare for this model to pop up on ebay,

thats why the biiiig price imo.

It s not such a bad looking box though you could say its unusual!

brutus442 - 2013-01-15 11:20

Very True Deech it's unusual but aren't all Sony boxes? I give credit to Sony for pushing the design envelope during the peak of boombox popularity.

It shows that Sony in the 80's wasn't afraid to blaze new trails with it's designs!

I totally agree with that Brutus!

Sony back then (and not only in the 80s but 70s also)

was so creative and ahead of the game.

The designers were thinking forward.

When it came in terms of functionality

Sony did stand out of the lot.

For some people the looks are controversial but the features

are astonishing !

I do like the looks exactly for this reason because they look unusual.

Maybe their weakness was the sound but at least you can say

that they made something different !

nice and clean, but its another case of 2 nutters bidding against each other and not knowing where to draw the line.....crazy

davebush - 2013-01-19 04:26

sony were and still are great innovators

look at this for a record player

brutus442 - 2013-01-19 05:35

I agree hole heartedly Davebush, but Sony quality has slumped incredibley in the last 15 years. Even on the design front, they seem to be more on the conservative side. It's a shame really....Sony was at the top of their game in the 70's and 80's

Crazy,is a good word to discribe the price,80's box but almost a 1970's look. It's a Sony no doubt innovator's for sure,I think maybe that price would make sens, for when it was brand new or someone out there really need's to get back to their youth be it rare or not iv'e seen better sony's go for much less!

I think Sony's designs started to go south in the mid 90's, some of their Walkmen were dire. 10 years previous and even the entry level models were well made and in their own way desirable. I think the last few years however have seen an improvement. The latest gen WM's albeit MP3 types are well made and sound good.

No wonder Apple stole Sony's crown. It was a perfect storm. With lower sound and build quality and lack of inspiring designs, Sony set themselves up for a fall. Enter Jonathan Ives and the rest is history. OK, there was the memory Stick Walkman but Sony doggedly stuck to their locked in proprietary way of doing, well, most things...(Sonic stage anyone)?

Andreas Pavel invented the portable cassette player first. Then Sony came along and perfected the look, sound and of course marketing. The MS WM came out 1999, then Apple made the iPod, Oct 2001 and "pulled a Sony" echoing the WM launch of 1979. I hope Sony get back their crown.

lav.loo - 2013-01-19 12:16

you could say the same for most if not all big brands these days NakD, design and quality is a far cry from what it used to be and it will never get better, the days of quality and looks are well gone so lets not kid ourselves.

we can all sit back and hope for things to improve but let's face it the future does'nt look very bright atall.

as is with most things these days it's all about the money, where did it all go wrong

bison - 2013-01-19 12:48

i didnt realise these were so rare.. i seen one go last year for about £20..the listing was poor, i would have gone for it but something else was in my sights.

davebush - 2013-01-19 13:33

gotta remember,  we live in a throw away society ....when an audio unit goes wrong nowadays...we just throw it away....unlike back in the day when it would go to a repairers.....thus....there are no repair workshops about any more.....

most units these days are all IC chip based which dont normally get repaired due to thier intricate construction.....then they become non cost effective to repair......

But by the same token....if IC chip based items were not invented, you would still be carrying a brick mobile phone around........

There`s good n bad in everything......even radio raheem..........just kiddin lad

Amen Davebush...in summary Planned obsolescence...just take a look at computers.

Audio equipment in the day were investments. Some passed on generationally (tube amps) Now we have to have the latest and greatest...but at the lowest cost with dubious quality.

It's a sad reflection on our value of quality
