Sony Walkman F800

paul.cusentino - 2012-07-24 18:26

Just wondering if anyone else is looking at maybe getting the new flagship Walkman from Sony. I know  we're pretty much just into the older stuff on this site, but this caught my eye. I might take the dive in getting something current to add to my collection. Thoughts?

Looks very interesting, I'm curious to know what this music player is capable of running Android 4.0 on a Tegra 2 processor. I actually prefer the tactile click wheel to the touch screen display on my iPhone while in transit, it's just too cumbersome.

paul.cusentino - 2012-07-24 19:18

Yeah, the click wheel is definitely easier to deal with. I believe there's going to be a lower end non-Android Walkman that has that. I don't know if I can pass up on a Walkman running Android 4.0, seems way too cool. As long as it's not that big and clunky, I'm pretty sure I'm sold on it.

I'm gonna stick with my Sony HiMD player when it comes to digital audio

I like making mixtapes - when are people gonna stop convincing themselves they need their whole music library with them at all times - in a lossy compressed format?

paul.cusentino - 2012-07-25 09:55

I used to make MD mixtapes, but I found that even the biggest capacity doesn't hold enough music for me. I'd try to throw a couple albums by the same band on one MD, and I usually came up short and had to drop a song or two. Quality was very good, though. I will always be very fond of my MD Walkman.

hi md 1gb discs holds 45 hours

pcm is a different matter

I think sometimes people put convenience over quality

personally I lke changing discs

I can't be bothered with fumbling through discs for songs during the rush hour on a crowded subway, at home or on the weekends is a different story.

then you've given up on music and no one can save you

I was browsing the Sony style store the other day, and spotted an open-box deal on this NWZ-Z1060 for less than half the retail price so I grabbed it. I loaded it up with a couple of CD's I ripped to .flac and was pleasantly surprised with the sound quality, especially when paired with the Fiio E06 amplifier. I'm also eagerly anticipating my new ihifi812 DAP/AMP which should arrive any day now.

Well my ihifi812V2 just arrived and I thought I would upload unboxing photos for reference. The unit is made of all metal and is about the size and weight as the WM-DD9. It came loaded with Chinese pop songs in flac format, and I have to say that I'm very impressed with the sound quality out of the box. The headphone power output is rated at up to 450mW into 16 ohms and can drive even my larger headphone without amplification. I think it also has eq settings, but the sound is fine as is and doesn't need to be tweaked.

Can it light a cigarette?

retro - 2012-08-28 11:48

Ha! I actually like the generic look, although it's not for some tastes.

minty - 2012-08-28 11:51

Yea, I like it. Really solid looking.

nak.d - 2012-08-28 11:53

Retro, nice item. How is the build? And have you tried it with your own music?

retro - 2012-08-28 12:06

The build quality is very solid, and the push buttons have a nice "click" when pressed. I'm loading songs into it now, and the sound quality is excellent. What's most noticeable,

is that the female voice sounds very silky on this unit.

Sound and looks very interesting, more like a headphone amp with MP facility! What cans you running? I've been using Grado SR 60 with my X series with very nice results...I think even dyed in the wool MP3 haters would like it

retro - 2012-08-28 12:37

I'm using Sennheiser Amperiors and Sony MDR-D77's, both are geat cans. I may also look into the Grado 325is, I read mostly good reviews on them.

claret.badger - 2012-08-28 12:48

the rep from Sennheiser say the Amperiors are the SAME as the hd25 except the billet metal covers

hmmmmm - i'm not convinced that I need to "upgrade" my tuff plastic bins for them just yet.

Some say they can barely hear the difference between the two, but the bass sounds tighter and the mids sound slightly different to me. Also, the impedance of the drivers are only 18 ohms as compared to the 251II's and there's added dampening material inside the cans. They also replaced the cushions with felt. I'm not sure if they are worth the premium if you already have them. Nice rig by the way.

claret.badger - 2012-08-28 13:14

cheers man - the NH1 is peanuts at the moment - you can score one for less than a 100.

The unit is powered by a 6 volt battery as oppose to the usual 1.2-3v gumsticks - and the HD digital amp has power a plenty to drive my HD25's - not that I noticed my iphone struggling tbh.

The versitility of the magnesium bodied marvel outstands me - not only does it sound good with ATRAC files - better than mp3s somehow, not sure why that is. But also I like (and it's a personal thing this) the tactil nature of slotting in a new disc to change music.

I was able to record 10 hours of radio  music per disc - direct from the toslink feed from my HD telly before I left the UK - and the quality is above average.

I can record PCM to disc on the fly - so taping vinyl is not an issue

it plays the older format MD's no problem

you can use it as external hdd

and 1gb discs hold 45 cd's

Plus the battery is charged in 20 minutes - and will last all week

the only negative some will say is that the newer RH1 will play mp3's direct - via drag and drop from PC - this needs to convert via sonicstage

oh and the display on the unit is gash

counter in that you can buy peoples MD collections on ebay for around 40 quid (I did - I got 120 discs for that much - and the guy had good taste)

buy one - before everyone discovers them
