Noise Cancelling Earphones

nak.d - 2013-01-17 15:08

I'm looking to buy some noise cancelling earphones, around the £50 mark. Does anyone have any experience with these? My current Sony ones (for X series WM) still work but nothing lasts forever.

Should have bought some last year when they were approx £46 ... because now the price has trebled. Despite several calls to Sony/their spare parts people this price is correct

Sony do some at a fairly good price; I could just buy those but I'm looking for opinions on alternatives based on experience

From what I was told, my NWZ-Z1060 will only work (noise cancelling) with the buds that came with it, although I never tried replacements.

Have you thought about getting noise isolating as opposed to noise cancelling?

Noise isolating does a much better job and requires no electronics or batteries.

A good noise cancelling headphones can do about 22db – 24db and good noise isolating headphones can do about 40db – 44db. Don’t forget that decibel (db) is logarithmic, meaning that 44db is 20 times quieter then 24db.

Plus noise cancelling only work in a small range, where as noise isolating work across all range.

I would recommend something like Etymotic IEM’s with comply foam (have a look at the mc range), I use the Etymotic ER-4S with comply foam. The isolation is second to none.

The only caveat is if you do not like inserting IEM’s deep into your ears, they will be no good to you.

Thanks toocool, great advice. The Etymotic ER-4S looks and no doubt sounds great, for now I'll look for something more in my price range (maybe another set of Etymotics). Eventually, I think noise isolating types could prove more useful, long term. As you say, no electronics or batteries.

Thanks. Shame about the price difference (£35 or $55) from Amamzon.com Vs .UK but still appears worth it. Postage may kill the difference anyway I guess. 4 different ear buds and 2 replacement filters supplied. Occasional agumentative types aside, reviews seem positive
