Hello From The New Guy!

bkoenig - 2012-09-08 20:37

Hello!  I think I have caught the bug.  I've been watching ghettoblasters for a couple months and stumbled across this site today.  I also collect mid 80's freestyle BMX bikes and restore classic arcade machines.  I've been into those hobbies for years and am active of those sites.

I decided that I need a JVC M90 and Conion C-100f in my mancave.  I figure this is a great place to start.  Its funny - I started collecting arcade machines "Just Wanting a Donkey Kong and a Star Wars" then ended up having owned 300+ machines over the past 10 years.  Then I got into BMX bikes just wanting a 1985 Haro Master and a 1985 Hutch Trick Star.  I ended up amassing a huge collection that stuff.  Now, its on to radios.  Like I said, I have my eyes on 2........  We'll see where this gos!

Ha.....M90 and C100 are 2 high priced grails and extremely rare......

Your supposed to start at the bottom and work your way up to them ....

But if you can afford them,     why not......

Good luck in your quest and a big welcome from Blackpool....UK

Welcome mate,

Arcade machines are for sure sound a cool thing to collect, congrats on getting so many great models!

I agree with davebush, the majority of us started out looking round charity shops / thrift stores, and car boot sales just trying to find any nice looking radio from the 80s. We found lots of the lower-end models for next to no money and were very happy with them, and often still are because most boomboxes are unique and desirable in their own way. The lower end models perform very well at the jobs that they're designed to do, and look really good at the same time. Most of us who buy or look to buy JVC M90s or Conion C100fs do so because we know, from many years and lots of experience with different manufacturers and models, what we like a radio to do, and which do it best. We appreciate and admire certain manufacturers models, and sometimes avoid even high-end models from other manufacturers because we have owned other radios that they made, and know what they offer and what they're like to work on etc. What I'm trying to say is, if I was you I'd only go for an M90 or C100f when you know WHY you want one, not just because they're seen by others to be the best. With experience you may decide you don't like JVCs.

Anyway sorry for the lecture , I hope you enjoy your time here, and happy collecting!

bkoenig - 2012-09-09 16:44

No doubt.  I understand.  As you can see by my collection, its the nostalgia factor.  This was my generation - started with Star Wars figures and video games, then bicycles, then on to radios.  Later car stuff.  When car stuff arrived, I had a job and was able to buy some stuff that I wanted.

Before that, I really had nothing except the for magazines and Sears catalog at Christmas time.  My parents didn't really have the $$$ to buy anything extremely extravagant for me that I dreamed of having.  Now later in life, things have come around.  I have the expendable income to buy some things.  I have always been a collector.  That plus expendable income along with fond memories from the 80's drives me.

I remember watching Beat Street, Disorderlies, and Do The Right Thing and drooling over the big boxes!  I remember listening to an ACDC Back In Black tape on a tape recorder that my dad had.  Later, I had dubbed copies of LL, Run DMC, and The Beasties.  I listened to them on some junk radio dreaming of bigger things.  Now to get my hands on those dreams!

Wow!  I really jumped in this hobby head first this weekend!  His description in his ad was very vague.  He emailed me a more detailed description and stated that the tape player is the only thing that doesn't work and that it just hums and doesn't spin.  It sounds like a belt to me, but we'll see!  I can't wait to get my 1st 2 boxes!

brutus442 - 2012-09-23 20:22

Holy !

You don't start slow do you?

Good job Koenig...two grails in two nights. The stuff of dreams!

Enjoy them both when they arrive...but take plenty o' pics for us!!!
