most expensive buy-it-now boombox on ebay

samovar - 2012-07-16 10:49

I wonder what is the rationale of some ebay prices. Recently a brand new JVC RC-M70L sold for no less than € 1.562. That was possibly the most expensive boombox so far, but (1) it was a collector's item, and (2) it was auctioned. It's easy to be carried away one step away from crowning a lifetime search.

But what to do of a JVC RV-NB51 for € 1.184,50, when nine were sold by the same guy for € 236,90 and 10 more boombox are still available?

How about a Panasonic RX-ED90 Cobra top egg for £475 (ono) on UK Ebay?

Surely nobody could be that daft?

elektronic-star-DISCOUNT strikes back! this time the same item goes for the super-bargain price of € 5.922,50 (13 units sold, more than 10 availble):

If you were wondering how he arrived at that price; it's exactly 5x what he wanted before.

What an idiot.

Nothing wrong in fishing for another idiot to buy it

I feel the irresistible impulse to buy (now!) this bargain grail from round the corner. Shipment is almost for free and custom duties will probably be a trifle:

(Please help me stop this insane drive, as I already have two of these beauties -- and one of them I got almost for free...)

nickfish - 2014-06-04 06:29

Resist the temptation.

You could buy a De-Lorean for that much and go back in time and buy a new Sharp and get home in time for a pint and still have change for supper.

The man is a fooool! Pity him.

andyboombox - 2014-06-04 06:54

that is a scandalous, ludicrous price indeed-who in their sane, right mind pays that much?whats going on with the world?i wouldnt mind just going back say 15 years to before ebay came out,and hit up the second hand shops and the carboots-id be lost for choice with quality gf sharps for 10 and 20 pound here and there, and who knows perhaps the odd jvc m series for low money?ive said it before and ill say it again-ebay has killed it for genuine collectors like myself and all us guys-just called at a second hand shop near me and they want 50 quid for a sharp vz3000-totally untested.....their attitude?????'well even if it doesnt work,we will still want 50 for it as we know its worth more than that on EBAY'.its the modern buzz word, and its killing collecting.sorry everyone- rant over-it just grinds my gears is all

andyboombox - 2014-06-04 07:20

hey nick....when i was in the delorean owners club mate deloreans were changing hands for between £16-25,000but,id much rather have a delorean at that money than one of these jvcs for that moneyyoud be getting more for your money for sure

oh no, this would be an ebay seller's style trick! Instead, I'm trying my hand with a famous Houdini-number, ie: how to make a Philips disappear:

Now: did you get which Philips...?

How do you like this gadget?

aI bet neither NickFish nor hisrudeness, who both hate Philips, would care a damn for it (doesn't the box remind you of the Philips aka Magnavox D8444 -- with double cassette?). Yet those who are not prejudiced may be willing to have this fella live in their private boomboxland, right? Take a closer look:

bcHmmm... the box is removable, the puppet has a head. Interesting. Let's read the description of the item:

d...head and right hand loose... boom box has a bit of chip on this side... hmmm... how much can this be? $5? $10? Behold and despair:

eh!

Yep your eyes didn't fail you: it's ONLY US $699,99

You may wonder: ... limited edition ("limited": how many of these were actually produced?) ... Jason Siu (who's who?).... Look at another ebay auction featuring another "very rare vinyl toy" by the same designer, a $19,99 buy-it-now

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hot-Ja...drobot-/361697042700

f

Now I have a feeling that the first auction may even obscure the one walkman archive nominated for the auction of the year at this link

At first I thought it was a real Philips that you could put cassettes in. Then I saw the height of 12".  It would be a lot cheaper to buy a Philips D8444 and a shop dummy to make a full size one

Someone has been making sculptures using ball TVs. From this I guess he ran out of the JVC Videospheres. Even using a real Videosphere (which I have two of) you could make one of these for about £250.

I suppose that is missing the point of Modern Art. When Tracey Emin couldn't be bothered to make her bed one day she sold it for £150000.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Bed

That makes the most expensive boombox seem good value.

radio.raheem - 2016-09-05 12:52

Longman boomboxes are quiet cheep compaired to some things, i was looking at breitling and rolex watches, for a good one you're looking at 15 grand lol

That price depends on the art market, not on the value of the artwork. And we all know the art market is on steroids -- pricey items for nabobs who lock them in the caveau of  some bank.

The point with the vinyl toy is that it's not even the art market that makes the price. It couldn't, since that toy is not an artwork. It's an industrial object (the wording "limited edition" makes me laugh: where're the artist's signature & the number of edition, if we want to play the art market game?).

$699,99 is just a silly price of a silly auction for silly buyers on a silly site. Good for a laugh or a nomination to auction of the year.
