Sony Walkman Shirt, it says vintage and it's printed on a Hanes Beefy T, made in USA. Back when I was a young screen-printer in the 80's, the Beefy T was the goto blank shirts! I think I used to goto Kmart and Zayres to get them for around $3.50 USD/each (blank). https://www.ebay.com/itm/256741472579?
A little off topic but still cool for the 8mm collector, some display shelves https://www.ebay.com/itm/126893356299?
I would guess it is something to go behind a shop counter for holding four different types of BASF cassettes. Back when splashing out meant buying two or even three. IMHO more likely to be early 1980s. These are the cassettes that might have gone in there. https://www.reddit.com/r/cassetteculture/comments/q8on58/sm_special_mechanism_what_does_it_do/
In the early days of the forum, members were paying silly money for R2R cassette tapes. I mentioned this local company had them on blow out for around six dollars and they sold out instantly. Now's your chance to own one for yourself, I'm on the fence and think I do need one so act quick. The cleaner bottle is a nasty banned chemical that cleans heads like new and well worth the price alone. The cleaning tape is nice with the clear shell, you can see it pick up tons of dirt but you can also use a foam swab for normal accessable decks. https://www.ebay.com/itm/176708706601?
This is the first time I've seen this JVC RC-S5JW with a battery pack! This is a very odd boombox, the transformer on the left is all I've seen, it slides in the back and has a cord. For a portability, it needs the battery box one the right which I've never seen before. I don't know if it was an option or part of the set, this is a very nice HD build and was probably pretty expensive when new. https://www.ebay.com/itm/177275680120?
I've never seen that battery pack either. I've always thought it was a nice model. A truly beautiful early 80s mini JVC. If I ever come across one around here, I'll take it!
JVC did a great job with the mini's but this one is different with the two power options. I need one of the electronics guys to explain why they needed the "cord pack." If I had to guess, the unit does have AUX out for speakers and it probably has a healthy output for those. One of the ads I posted says 1 watt per channel for the base unit. It is heavy (the ad says 4 lbs), I'm guessing the weight is in the transformer and maybe in the newly developed "special" Biphonic Speakers. The case is close to 2" of depth, not huge in the small speaker world but more than 90% of my mini's. Just for anybody that cares, the Sansui FX-700R is around 4" and the QT-15 is around 2" but I don't think that one is all speaker depth.
My guess is that there was no room for a battery pack and transformer in the small device. So they made a separate battery and power pack. Nowadays they would just include a simple power adapter to feed the device with low voltage DC. I remember Walkgirl had one.
I think this is the ultra-rare black version, if I remember corrrectly, Radio and maybe one other member had owned one of these. Most are standard JVC Silverish. Of course there's some premium to the pricing. The JVC PC-R550C https://www.ebay.com/itm/205605007295?
Really a lovely looking box! I’ve heard there are also a red and a white JDM? versions! Didn't member MT have them from Japan? I’m a big fan of the JVC PC series. My favorite is the PC-3. Not the most obvious choice, because it looks pretty boring. But the box is so wonderfully intuitive to operate with the rotating knobs and the mechanical deck. Only thing wrong with it is the lack of a remote control option like PC-5. I should add that I don't own the PC-R550. So maybe that's my future favorite. If I ever find one for a less exclusive price. Nevertheless, a great opportunity for someone to score the rare black version!
