Wow! I don’t know how you find this stuff lol. SUPER INTERESTING. I love the business end of the consumer radio industry.

Just asked CHAT GPT about the state of the economy in late 1981. Looks like it was the worst recession since the Great Depression. I never knew that. My family struggled financially through the early ‘80’s. This was at least part of the reason I suppose.

There were some older members, Jens on here and Axel over on The Vintage Knob, those guys knew how to dig and gave me the inspiration. Jens seemed to know about every boombox ever made (and the also known as, AKA's) and had a CD with a ton of information called the BBDB (Boombox Data Base). Unfortunately I think he was an older member and kind of disappeared around 2012, his friend died and he had all the BBDB info locked up which killed the project.

Personally I'll look with different combinations of search terms and sometimes look more at images than the organic results. Also using google translate and searching in the native language helps and can be more effective with a VPN. One of these days I'll buy the newspapers.com subscription but haven't I haven't run out of free material yet.

I dig ditches for work so coming home and sitting in a chair is relaxing for me. These kinds of threads are very interesting to me and hopefully give YouTube Creators some inspiration for good content.

Going back to the article, Singapore was a huge audio manufacturing hub for around 10 years going into the early 80's but I have very little, if any, equipment from there. It makes me wonder if any was shipped here or if they never marked it "Made in Singapore."

Thanks for the great info and tips. I did the week long free trial of newspapers.com and it was incredible. Endless volumes of ads on BBX’s and BBX news articles. Too bad it’s so terribly expensive for a subscription.

Wasn't the BBDB on a CD or two? Someone had the CD but the data was locked with a password if I recall? There has got to be focus on trying to crack / hack that open somehow? :nodding:

    Hitachi 3D50.jpg

    Didn't @h-designer work there ?

From what I have seen the peak time for boombox manufacture in Singapore was in the 1990s with both Hitachi and Panasonic making very black quite upmarket boxes there i.e the Hitachi 3Ds and the various Panasonic Cobras. I am pretty sure that the Panasonic I bought new in the early 1990s was made in Singapore as well but this was easier to get to.

Yep, my Panny RC-CT990, oldies but goldies, was made there too.

Btw, Panny is sitting not far from me, playing "The Police. Synchronicity", 1983
but from my smartphone via a bluetooth adapter. :) Couldn't find time to serve decks there.

That is within a year or two of the Panasonic I bought, and fits in with the time when black buttons on a black background was the height of styling. Put the units on "Black Ash" shelving and they would all but disappear.
