I don't see a red one just looking at JDM Websites, there is a modern version rendering on The Pocket Calculator Show Website in red and wood. I've started getting a small collection of the PC's, just missed one down the street last week for next to nothing. In the early days of the forum I liked them but the older members weren't really into three-piecers and they tended to go for cheap, lucky for me. Another, very rare, later PC came up for sale last year but I just wasn't in the mood at it's price point. I've never seen anything posted on it outside of a catalog page photo. Just doing some calculations, the 550 in Japan would have been around $500 (109,800 Yen). I don't think they discounted like they loved to do in the USA so the same box, after shipping, might have retailed for around $700 USD in 1982. At the same time you could get a a full, kind of nice, stereo system from the retailers at the same price. Tough competition plus the one weakness in almost every compo is the speakers, luckily most can use better quality speakers. Good luck with your search!
Thanks That there would be a red one was probably just a dream. I had to use Google to figure out why I thought that. A nice example of wishful thinking, haha https://www.stereo2go.com/topic/ind...9974511314435360&board_oid=193392314111653326 109,800 Y is M90 and PC-5 territory! With a boombox, the speakers are always a compromise of course. That's why many single-piecers also have outputs for connecting external speakers. Incidentally, I hardly ever do that myself. The technical compromise with the speakers is precisely what gives the boombox its character and why I like boomboxes so much and not stationary hi-fi. These days, there are still some nice things to be found in the detachable speaker segment. Yesterday, I received a near mint and complete FH-10W from eBay for under €100. It only has the usual issues like the APM surrounds and cassette belts. Things that are easy to solve. Since I didn't have the FH-10 yet, I grabbed it. The days when you could get these kinds of machines for next to nothing to save them from the recycler are unfortunately far behind us. I hope a nice 550 or 50 will come along the same way someday. But my real holy grail of that series is the PC-6 or PC-7. Once I have those I'll probably stop collecting haha
Figures Mystic has a unicorn white version. I've said it many times before, we only got the boring black versions which would be cool if we had different colors, but 99% were black. The white 550 does have a T-tag on the back, wonder who the builder was (HTD)? I found mine locally, I also got the killer Sansui Car Stereo (the first with AM stereo) and some other boomers but I don't remember all of them. I wonder which one is the largest and how it compares to the DC-7 which does have some huge speakers attached to it.
Some signed LL Swag, there's a lot on ebay but this is pretty cool! https://www.ebay.com/itm/134636489676?
Who doesn't want a micro TV in their car stereo? I posted something on this unit on here somewhere, no idea where. The Mustang TV/Car Stereo! I didn't translate but it look like an old listing. https://sp.olx.com.br/sao-paulo-e-r...o-toca-fitas-com-tv-mustang-antigo-1388286106
Something cool my sister found for sale and gave me for my birthday. She even found some themed wrapping paper to go with it. If you haven't worked out what it is it is a desk tidy and sellotape dispenser. Probably from the "cassette revival" era as it is made in China/
An new cassette mook is out! Axia, Denon and That's. Shipped from Japan, going for $37 USD which is close to what it's going to cost in Japan. https://www.ebay.com/itm/388823346171
The Who have an official release on tape! Limited edition, I have no idea when these first came out. https://shop.thewho.com/products/who-classic-shell-cassette?
Sony TC-520CS, no radio but a neat version of a portable stereo cassette player. https://www.ebay.com/itm/127320818539?
Another early Sony, the CF-500, this would have been a kid's dream for late night recording of the Top 40. It looks late 60's, right before Sony's were pretty easy to identify, I would have guessed Crown on this one if it didn't have badging. https://www.ebay.com/itm/317213894913?
This seller has several lots of boombox parts for sale. https://www.ebay.com/str/vintageboomboxparts?_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l170197
The Imperial Mini-Rack 250M, a beast from the old days that looks ready to take on the Telefunken M1 for boombox dominance! https://www.ebay.com/itm/167341738126?
Wow a real unicorn, the TEAC A-860, it looks like it was for broadcasting? https://www.ebay.com/itm/236045996123?
A JVC Twinch (2" screen) with a twist! Hall of Fame Baseball Player Robin Yount's JVC, probably given to him in a swag-bag. I've got one of these little beauties, it has some other AKA's, maybe made by Orion? (nickeccles would know) The grill on the dial is for the speaker, overall a really cool little TV that has a matching tiny boombox. https://www.ebay.com/itm/126959326708?
Fairly rare in the USA, they seem to be more boombox than component stereo. The Marantz MS-300 is very close to the PMS-3500 Boombox. https://www.ebay.com/itm/146188435490? I have no idea if these go with this stereo, this is another unrelated listing for the marantz MS-10 Speakers, this guy wants silly money for these and it would be wild if they went together since they're both very hard to find. https://www.ebay.com/itm/336060177117?
