A Crown with a case, this one? There is also a model with case but also the radio R2R one, Crown CNW-5930.
From November 1979, I always wondered what was going on behind the scenes with Superscope and Sony. Right before the Walkman is released, Superscope does an ad blitz for the CD-320 and it's just $21 USD more than the Walkman. Yea their 3-4x larger but it has much more to offer including recording. So did Sony say let's copy this but make it smaller or did Superscope know the Walkman was coming out and tried to downsize a field recorder.
.....and another from 1980, the CD-330 with three-headed goodness, probably the best deal in portable three-headed machines today.
They do look very impressive now, I think the third one over was the one I saw/used a few times. By that time in the 80's it was hard to tell how nice equipment was and they were using mostly plastic parts, which was just getting to the point of being accepted over metal. It's hard to get the actual sell price here because audio was discounted, it was a fun game to get a "bargain." I have to believe the $689 USD was the sell price which would be $2319.00 today, I think it's the largest one in the photo.
For sale on Yahoo.jp right now, a very rare brochure for the UNIX CRS-52 that had a silly money price of 59,800 Yen when the player was new (around 1982). Using online calculator, that's $254.00 USD worth $874.00 today! This is a nice heavy, well-made boombox. I haven't opened mine yet but all the controls feel really nice.
That new price is pretty steep for a boombox without tweeters and only tone control. I do think it looks quite nice, that very square design. Why would it have been so expensive? Was Unix just an expensive brand, a marketing ploy, so to speak?
I think they were still milking the Marantz Connection but the controls are high quality and they all tend to be heavy. All of the UNIX's I've seen are similar higher end units but if you get on Yahoo.jp you'll see some smaller speakers and microphones that don't look like much.
1996, still cranking them out but they're listed as "Professional Products" which might be the last of Superscope when they moved to Illinois. This looks like the EU Brochure, anybody know which model is the on the top right? Maybe the PMD101, I'm not sure if I have that one in my stash, I don't remember one without a VU meter.
I don't think I've posted this yet, from the Marantz 1982 Catalog. It looks like they phased-out the tiny SA-230 Amp. While these are gold, I've mostly seen them in silver, with the EQ being the exception, mine is definately not as golden.
