Cool! :) From translation I can gather that this is a sort of Language Learner.

From 1981, not sure if I posted this, it takes forever to go through some of these threads!

Neat little catalog page with the new Discman and some boomboxes to hook it to.

I can imagine this was a cool feature back in the day - adding those NiCd rechargeable batteries..

I believe batteries helped kill boomboxes, they were so expensive.

    1982, killer Sony!

Around then a fellow student bought rechargeable batteries for his Sharp boombox. Definitely a talking point as D cells cost about £5 each which was about the same price as an LP. However, I reckon most Boomboxes spent most of their lives plugged into the mains. Batteries were for special occasions only.

For info Comet pioneered the out of town electrical discount warehouse in the U.K.

There were two different branches I used to regularly visit back then.

I think another thing that helped kill boomboxes was the number of other things to buy.
A former colleague who is now approaching 80 said that when he was young, once you had a decent TV and Stereo there wasn't anything else left to buy.
By 1982 Comet were also selling
    • Personal Stereos
    • HiFis
    • Computers (deemed essential if your kids were to be employable).
    • VCRs
    • Video Cameras
    • CBs (which only became legal in the U.K. in 1981). I actually bought my first in Comet at the end of 1981, paying £60.

We spent a lot of time at Lake Michigan, most people on the beach had mini's. We'd eat up all the battery juice in one day, especially if the tape was going. Rechargables were around but they were expensive so none of us had any experience with them as far as how long they lasted in life and between charges. I know that "cordless" phones that were the rage when they came out, didn't have a lot of battery life initially.

I should do a test on one of mine and see how long batteries last, I'd use my eneloops, my D-cells are like gold now. Luckily they hold a charge for a long time.

Sony Hotline Catalog, it looks around 1984? I'd say this was more for kids, there's no high-end models but there's some neat stuff like the saw blade turntable and the never seen in the USA MSX Hit Bit Computer. It looks like the future we were promised with TV-audio-computers all hooked together. While we do it now on our phones, this looks a lot more fun. Check out the silly money price for the whole system, 469,600 yen or $1878.00 USD in 1984.

Unfortunately parts of this are cropped out.

Found on X, from 1983 I think this was a full-line audio catalog, see the punch holes?

Sony 1975, the Captain 55 was very popular over here, I haven't seen the other models besides the Sports 11 which is early branding for the "Sports" Line.

I love checking out historical information like this and having a little graphic designer (old school B4 computers) in me, I like hearing about the thought process like the 1961 Logo was changed for a neon sign in Hong Kong.
