Anybody get one yet? Techmoan gave it a great review, I don't mind the way it looks but that's the most talked about point I hear about it other than it doesn't have a radio.
I don’t like We Are Rewind products because of their design. I think it’s an enormous misstep to sell ‘80’s boomboxes and personal cassette players skinned in a 1950’s Dieter Rams / Braun aesthetic. I love ‘80’s electronics and I really love Dieter Rams industrial design work but NOT together in the same product. I don’t care how good the WAR boombox sounds, the design spoils it for me.
I agree and I think for those who like the design, it’s a GREAT sounding premium boombox and a solid effort from WAR. It’s just not for me
Reli, I agree that the price is really high…but I have mixed feelings. I own a Tivoli Songbook Max. It’s a “modern” BT boombox. I fell in love with it first time I saw it but refused to buy it bc of the $500 (on sale) price. I eventually gave in and bought one. It’s a premium product, very solidly built, and sounds incredible. Is it worth $500? I would say yes. If the new WAR boombox sounds as good as the Tivoli I think that many people will be happy with it, despite the price. Conversely, I also own the new AIWA boombox made by LEOTEC. For the $230 price tag I think it represents a fantastic value and sounds really good. Not as good as the Tivoli, but for less than half the price, it’s a winner. I suppose my point is - if the price of the WAR BBX is on par with its sound quality and build quality, I think plenty of them will find a home. As I’ve stated before, I don’t like the design and I’d never buy one regardless of the sound quality.
Lithium-Ion battery only but it lasts a really long time between charges. Or you can just leave it plugged in charging as your using it. Don’t be caught off guard that it’s mono. I was really worried about that. After listening to it, mono was a non-issue. It’s a beautiful vocal-forward sound and the best sounding piece of audio gear I own. $600 MSRP but $479 on sale a few times throughout the year. I sent them a nice email and they let me buy it for $479 when it was not technically “on sale”.
i said it somewhere else already, i get that logistics costs on top of assembly, parts, whatever else add up- but like man i could get a real nice 3 head deck for 500 clams, or a nice professional walkman model. i dont care how good that tanashin mech be running i cant justify sinking 500 into one full credit where its due though, its made much better than anything else ive seen available currently. far as new goes it is probably one of the best on the market on the flip-side i dont really think the repair crowd used to working on these players are really their target demographic anyways lol
That's cool. This review said it couldn't be used while plugged in, but I guess they were wrong Tivoli Audio SongBook MAX Bluetooth Speaker vs JBL PartyBox 720 Portable Speaker JBLPARTYBOX720AM Comparison - HomeTheaterReview
Reli - after some further thought, I’m not positive I’ve actually had it playing while charging. Next time I charge it, I’ll make it a point to find out. It’s a gloriously quirky piece of gear. I have the green one…such an unusual color but gorgeous. Looks like stereo speakers, but it’s mono. Functions as a guitar amp…and other weird stuff. Knobs are heavily weighted and everything about it feels super premium. BC of where I live, I can’t turn it up, but my buddy has one and says higher volumes vibrate it across the table bc of the bass. It doesn’t feel like a super polished corporate product. Just quirky enough to be special.
The case is thick, rigid plastic. The knobs are thick plastic as well with a solid feel. There’s a resistance when turning them. Feels high-end. The only real metal are the two heavy-duty front toggle switches and the handle. Makes it feel like cold-war army gear. It’s more than the sum of its parts. Feels special, and quirky, and high-end. I yelled about the price for a year. Then I shut up and bought it. No regrets. I tried playing music while charging it and you are correct. Charging disables playback.
Radio reception is outstanding. I’ve never had to raise the antenna. it’s got a few odd quirks - BT volume control from your phone isn’t smooth and linear. It jumps fast and it’s too loud too quick. Better to control volume off the speaker itself, not your phone. Occasionally switching between sources can cause unpredictable volume increases or decreases. Lastly it takes a bit longer to boot up than you might expect. I chalk these up as minor annoyances on a speciality piece of gear. If I had the disposable income I would buy a second one as a back up. I like it that much. If you research the specs, they use some premium parts, especially the electronics. When comparing the Songbook Max to the new We Are Rewind boombox, the design languages are on opposite ends of the spectrum. The W.A.R. boombox works very hard to signal “modern reinterpretation of an ’80s boombox”…almost to the point of caricature. Its design language is intentionally performative. (unsuccessfully, IMO) I feel like the Songbook Max takes a different path. It doesn’t chase ‘80’s nostalgia or attempt to visually explain itself through vintage ‘80’s cues. Its design stands on its own merits, informed by function and restraint rather than cliched retro styling. The Songbook Max feels more confident and timeless. Less like a costume, and more like a product that simply knows what it is.
JFC, bloody hell......450 euro?? Looks absolutly magnificent but 450 euro? Really? Looks like a boombox for the woke bearded wanker with half shaved head with pony tail driven a shitty Tesla....and we are rewind is a french company, probably stuff will fall off within a year...... I hate hypes
This seems really odd to me. They should have realized that some people like to leave their radios on for days at a time. Is the battery pack removable, with standard format cells? I would hope so, given that it's going to need replacement eventually.
Surprisingly no…the unit would have to be disassembled to access the battery. The battery itself is unknown. Reasonably, it’s some kind of standard-issue li-ion pack that can be purchased on Amazon or EBay. For me, it’s a downside but not a dealbreaker. A few screws to access the internals, and a quick search of eBay / Amazon for a battery. Hopefully that’s all it is when replacement time comes.
