After some bit swapping and open lid surgery I now have a JVC PC55 which does everything apart from record (don't know why, the display says record but recordings don't happen). And the leftovers, basically a full PC55 minus handle, the amp/receiver lights up but makes no noise. The deck is fully functional and does record but the display has failed (Looks like rotted contacts down one side of the glass screen). I can see no sign of burning inside the amp/receiver but it is silent and as my apprenticeship was mechanical, fault finding it is beyond my skill level. My question is: Do you think I should attempt to swap the displays round so that I have a good display, in a fully working cassette deck? I have already had the bad one out and re-installed it (Not easy!) after attempting to clean the contacts and get it working. Or am I liable to break the good display by disconnecting it to move it? I think the problem with these is the papery cable that loops around the back, not the connections to the rest of the deck, but would like advice from someone with more knowledge/experience before I start to break things!
