Hello, I've had this Type III tape before (a Sony FeCr) and i used to have a deck that had a Type III preset. Now i want to re-record said tape using my better recorder (a WM-D6C). What preset should I use? Normal, chrome or Metal? Any advice? Thanks.
Since the D6C has to be internally calibrated for a cassette and if your D6C is not calibrated for this cassette, then you are unlikely to get the best recordings from it.
Obviously, but what would be the best setting to use to record on Type III for players that don't have Type III capability? The only Type III deck I have is a 1980 Kenwood KX-500, with not much high-end, I think the amorphous head and better electronics would help better use the sound of a Type III.
I don’t know, but since Type III is a blend of Type I + II maybe use Type II. I guess you can experiment.
Now for the result : Type II gives a very bassy sound with few treble overall, (because of EQ obviously) while Type I gave me a very sharp result.
I have a better answer: Put the blank Type-III in a safe-deposit box, and come back to it when you need money. Those things are so rare, they might as well be made of gold.
It wasn't blank when I grabbed it (got it from my someone's father) but it is still in pretty good cosmetic shape. It's a late 70s FeCr by Sony that goes with the AHF/BHF/CHF range of Type I.
The problem with type III is that there is no single optimum bias point. There are two different points, one for each compound, so there's no way to get a really good response. As the D6C has no variable bias you should make a real test...
