AIWA HS Series from 1986, love the tiny FM radio and radio headphones! The forgotten Stereo two go from the 80's.
aiwa HS-DX610 from 1993, Right around the Sony Buyout, the logo changes adn the products seem to take a nosedive in quality.
I have a pretty big collection of AIWAs including a really old portable turntable from the 60s. They always seemed to be a little more sophisticated then the other brands with very few crappy units.
Mr X. Have often wondered why I never bought any AIWA unit in the past. Maybe because my first unit was a Sony and that sounded so good to me at the time.
You may have heard my story, my slightly older next door neighbor (one of the smartest person's I've known), would come back from EE college and tell me about how AIWA Tape Transports would blow Sony away back in the very early 80's. He indoctrinated me with the brand. When I started doing serious thrifting, I always looked for AIWA but they were hard to find, especially the recording models. 20 years ago, a recording model might show up on ebay twice a year?
I remember buying my first Walkman back in 1983- the Sony WM-4. Still as loud and working well after all these years. A little worst for wear but this use to go everywhere with me for several years. Still love the sound. Feed it a good metal tape and it sounds very good. Also if I remember correctly I don't think there was many AIWA advertisements being shown compared to Sony so that probable had quite an influence on me at the time.
It's interesting seeing where all the portable advertising was done, Sony, Panasonic (National) and Sanyo definately put a ton of money in it world-wide, then the other guys followed but not nearly as much money was thrown at it.
Also over here in the UK Sony had many Sony centres where you go in and actually handle and listen to various units. I remember going to the Sony showroom in Regent Street in London. That's where I selected my recording equipment. They then delivered it to my local hi-fi shop who then delivered to my home address. I don't think ,afar as I know, AIWA having anything like that but as I have said I do like the look of many of their units.
We mostly had camera stores with a huge no-touch policy for kids, then around four appliance stores, these were big boxes (like Best Buy) that had a lot of nice mid-level stuff and some display units. For us it was more of a price thing, if you had $60 then there was maybe three or four choices, one might have a radio, one might not have headphones. I've seen the Sony Centers in the Singapore Papers, a few of the other brands had them, I think AIWA also but you'd have to go through the very long thread to find the ad.
Found over on YouTube, AIWA SB-100, I don't ever remember seeing one of these from AIWA, anybody have one?
