    There's a reason MD didn't catch on in the US, look at the price for an MD Player, $800 USD. I was buying cool old English Convertibles for less than that in 84.

    I think you are a decade out. According to Wikipedia MiniDisc wasn't launched until 1992 so 1994 seems more likely.
    As for prices Early adopters always pay a premium price.

    By 1999 you could buy a similar Aiwa here in the UK for £170

    More expensive than a Walkman, which ranged from £20 to £70 in the same catalogue, but in real terms about the same as a good one in the mid 1980s.

    That was big money back then Longman, I was putting more money in a portable CD player and discs I could use in my car (I was driving a lot). I didn't have the room or equipment to make MD recordings, it would have added another layer of stuff.
