This is the method of repairing the gear, it was used when a new gear was not available.
Now, a new redesigned gear has been available for some time, so replacing is the preffered repair since there are many other things that need to be done on a DD like: mechanism cleaning, relubrication, adjustments, etc.

However, that method is still useful on walkmans like WM-10 and related models, which will have the takeup reel ring broken.

I took a parts dispenser and cut a piece out of the broken gear there and put it in the good device worked more or less well.

You have to love it but I don't think I'd have the patience, I'd make a bigger mess. One of the biggest issues is the plastic used for the gear is very slippery, it helps with gear movement but things don't like to stick to it. Usually it's very similar to UHMW, the white plastic cutting boards everyone loves, put glue on that, let it dry and see if it sticks....
